difference between 05 an 03 5.9l

my dad has on 03 and i have the 05. my engine is rated at 325/610. his is the 225 hp first of the new injection i believe. anybody know what the factory did to get the more hp and torque? is it the turbo, ecm, cam heads? he tried an aftermarket programmer and it threw a check eng lite while he's towing. we disconnected the progammer and haven't had the lite come back on. the codes were p0148 and p0236. one for fuel pressure problem and the other is boost to high for too long. he would like to know if there are factory parts he can use to increase his power levels to mine. i also seem to be getting a lot better mileage than his. yes i know the is has a lot to do with driver habits ad traffic conditions.

Do some searches here-- this topic gets asked about once a week. It is all the things you mentioned above and some others like third injection event. The ecm and the electronic wastegated turbo are probably the biggest. Does he have a 47RE or 48RE? That'll make a difference on what power you will want to go. The short answer to your question is yes, one good module or downloader will get him to your levels. I like the smarty others here like some other things. It depends on what you want to do. The Smarty alone will get him to 400 hp without anything else. BUT -- whatever you do decide, get gauges and monitor egts and stuff. You can get a quad boost fooler to take care of the codes. You didn't say which programmer you used that drained the rail either. The best thing you can do right now is spend some time here on the forum and get an education on what you want to do.

he's not looking for enormous amounts of power. he just wanted to know what the actual differences are between the two engines.....he had an edge programmer not the pda one, and it had 4 different power settings.

oh yeah, i hooked up a snap on scanner yesterday to clear the codes and he's getting 36 lbs of boost. he has a 90 degree fitting that limits the amount of signal to the wastegate. anybody know how much boost the 325/610 engine makes in stock configuration??????

I should have read a little more carefully too... no, you can't get to the 05 levels with factory parts. Off the top it would seem reasonable to say change that turbo and the ecm etc. But the ecm is totally different and that is the main thing holding him back. They are not interchangeable to my limited working knowledge. The second thing that you mention is the boost. Was that on the 03 that had that much boost? If so, that is too much by about 2 psi for max. Plus the 03 has a mechanical wastegate-- that is the 90 degree fitting. it is a pressure line to the wastegate diaphragm. The 05 uses an electrically operated wastegate. I do not know the stock boost on that year.

Stock boost for that 03 is 24-25 by the way.

I was making 32-34 psi on my 05 on stock settings.

i was under the imprssion that the low hp 3rd gens were the same in everyway except the ecm is programmed diferently for california emisions.i would think a smarty or a predator by diablo would work wonders for him.the pred is cheaper and is updateable with custom tunes,theres a couple in the classifieds here.i couldnt imagine what a 225hp 3rd gen would feel like.when i put my 305 back to stock i want to cry.

Running the SO stock is slow. It's ok running on cruise empty on the freeway, but in town, fagetaboutit.

I normally run the quad on 60 hp setting which theoretically puts the SO near the HOs stock numbers. It's still a bit of a dog, but the quad helps a lot when towing. Smarty on the way.

I believe you are correct. that is why smarty can state that on their different levels the SO ends up with same HP as the HO. For instance... the 305 hp motor on sw9 supposed to get 130 hp increase to 435. The 235 hp motor on same level will get 200 hp increase to 435. SWEET!
