Cutting the rear bumper

I have been considering putting reverse lights in the rear bumper. Figured I could do it with the grinder but I am concerned with the chrome peeling.

Maybe if I tape the outline? Any experience?

It shouldn't peel unless you snag the raw edge - as long as it's a good chrome job. I've done a bunch of holes with .035 thick discs in my 4 & 4.5 Makita grinders. If you want radiused corners, drill them first. I clamp a piece of iron along the cutline to get a really straight cut. Clamp the guide piece on the outside of the hole so if you slip sideways with the grinder you won't mar the good side of the hole. Don't try to cut too fast or it will turn blue. Good luck! Craig

It's much easier to mount them under the rear bumper - the hitch receiver can protect them.

I may, but I hate that unfinished look. I even considered mounting them to a bar with an actuator that swiveled down when the power was switched on.

I would like to mount them so that nobody knows they are there when they are off. They would light and swivel down when powered up. Tuck away when they are off. Kind of like hidden headlights on Vettes except under the bumper.
