Lightbulb Custom Fuel Tank Question

Does anyone know of a shop, or person, that is capable of building me a completely custom fuel tank for the bed that would use all available space but still be able to build a baffled box that way I could hook up the Transfer Flow Trax II system to control it. I want to do custom because I want it to fit under my tonneau cover but want more than the 50 gallons that Transfer Flow offers. They do not use nearly all of the available space. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Blue Torch Fab mostly builds rock crawlers and everything that goes with them. They do a lot of custom stuff you may want to try giving them a call, tell them what your plans are. I know they build fuel cells for rock crawlers.

they make seriously NICE stuff!!!!
browse the site their stuff is pimp.

or just look in your local yellow pages for "Fabrication" shops and just start calling.

I'm sure some more folks will chime in with ideas too.

Are you looking for stainless steel or aluminum?

generally used for marine applications so they are extremely sturdy. They will make it per your measurements.

Hi Wiggs,

You might also try a combination of things... I had a 56 gallon OEM replacement tank installed at TransferFlow last week (no muss, no fuss - just a clean install...). You might start with that and that would gi ve you a few extra gallons to play with come fab time for your in-bed tank to reach your final total gallon goal.

Not that you would use this guy, but I have found a very competent aluminum fabricator here in the Sacramento area (I am looking at custom boxes). I found him by asking the local pest control guys (the ones with the snazy alum tanks/boxes/etc) who was doing their stuff. I am also considering Taylor Wings who is also a local outfit that does nice custom work.

Thanks guys for yoru input so far.

I am doing the 56 Gallong replacement tank for starters, no doubt. Given where Diesel is sold around me, it is not the most convenient place to go if you are trying to be quick about it. I also do a lot of running back and forth between Pittsburgh and Columbus on very short turn-around and there is nothing more annoying to me than having to stop once in Columbus before I leave and then once when I return the very next day!

I will start checking out the info you have given me and keep you updated on my results. From the looks of things I would think you could get at least 70 Gallons, if not 80 if you used ALL available, width, height, and depth. Would you not agree given that the 50 Gal. fits under the Tonneau cover and looks to be several inches shorter and narrower than necessary?

Doesn't Transferflow also offer a 20+ gallon tank that replaces your spare tire?

So are you guys replacing the stock tank or are you adding a tank?? I am confused... I live close to Mexico and Diesel is only 1.80 a gallon there! $60 to fill up! Plus my friend took a sample and the Diesel looked better than the stuff in the US!!! go figure. anyway I also would like to add to my capacity but I dont want to lose to much space... I have a short box.

I am doing both. I am replacing the OEM tank with a 56 Gallon one and adding at least a 70 Gallon to the bed. I also have a short box since I have a MegaCab.

I thought I had seen them on Transferflow's web site in the past but they're not there now. Take a look at this article. If you could get them to build one for the Dodge, combined with their larger main tank and in bed tank you could get 170 gallons on board, but it would be heavy.

Alright, I called Transfer flow and they used to make the tanks that mount in place of the spare tire but stopped because they sold one of those to every thirty or so of the mid ship tanks. The main reason was because of the long installation time, 10 - 15 hours. I did locate a couple other manufactures that build in bed tanks that mount in front of and behind the wheel wells. They weren't too attractive. Sorry, can't spend more time on it but I"ve got to go to work now. Rick
