Computer burned instead of fuse

I have a problem and hope someone can help me I have a 2003 Dodge with a Cumming Diesel with 40,000 miles

This is what happened I pull a fifthwheel trailer with it and all of a sudden the flashers on the trailer on the left hand side don’t work ( the flashers on the truck are working )

I went to the trailer distributor who after checking everything out said the trailer was ok that the problem was with the pick up so I go to my Dodge dealer who claims that it’s the computer that burned out on it and charged me $ 1,300.00 to change it

My question is this if something went wrong with the wiring should it not be a fuse that burns and not the computer

How long are computers guaranteed for .

Thanks for your advise

Lolly

P.S. This is my first post Hi everyone

An 03 still has a fuse for the trailer lights. There is a flash update available for the TIPM , some also call it the FCM. Usually they just need reset after drawing too many amps. It is hard to say now, without #1 having the old part to test and #2 seeing the truck when it was broken. $1300 sounds awfull high too! Sorry about your luck. Welcome to DTR too! You will learn a lot from reading the wealth of information available here too.

Sounds like a typical Dodge design: Use a $1300 part to protect a $0.15 fuse.

I would find another dealer. The Front Control Module has fuses for the trailer lighting.

The most common thing to kill the computers is that they lose a ground connection on the outside , then when you use it they still need a ground so the computer finds one internally and that kills it , so you may want to figure that some change has happened recently [ somebody work on the truck ] or a bolt loosened that holds a ground connection , or it just corroded .

I think VZ is right,

When I had my CM flat bed everything worked great a day later my brake lights quit I searched every wire and connection took it back to the sales man he did the same thing and found nothing he said it has to be in the truck take it to the dealer so I did the dealer kn ew exactly what was wrong reflashed the ECM and I was out of there in ten minutes. Apparently the aftermarket lights drew more current that the stock lights the ECM saw this as a short and killed the circut before it burned the fuse out So there were no signs of a problem that I could find. Not saying this is your problem but it sure sounds similar to me if so that was a costly mistake on the part of the dealer.
