Coating on exhaust stack
Im going to be getting my front custom ranchhand destroy anything bumper re-powder coated to a grey color to match the grey strip on the bottom of the truck (top is white). Iv had my cat d6 5" stack on for about a year and the stock paint is starting to fade. How do you think powder coating will hold up to constant exhaust tempature changes over the next few years? I have access to many different kinds of coatings so if anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

I have 6" stainless stacks on my dually and I've used the infared temperature gun at work and they run around 400-700 degrees in the bed area where they join the tee coming from underneath. That's just after getting off the freeway so I'm sure they would get hotter if I had a decent load. Choose your coatings for those temps.
The biggest 'killer' of painted or powdercoated surfaces on those stacks or pipes is the thermal expansion and cooling.
The stretch from cold to incredibly hot really puts a strain on the coating and most of the time causes it to crack and peel off even if the surface is prepared because the coating tends to finish curing over time and gets brittle.
Have you considered chroming?

Thank you for the reply cdennyb, you bring up a good point. No not interested in doing chrome. Now that you meantion it powdercoating dosent seem like a good option for that. other exhaust parts usally dont come powder coated, mostlikely for that reason.
PC just can't handle the heat. Get a good ceramic coating. Not only looks good, but blocks some of the heat transfer. Make sure you find a company that coats them inside and out - like Jet Hot.
