changing axle ratios
changing axle ratios
I have 4.10s want to go to 3.73's or so mainly for fuel economy the 4.10s are eating it down alot. any ideas or places too look for pricing and all that go along with it. should i just change the tires any input appriciated.
Unless you like/want bigger tires I wouldn't go that route. Larger tires typically hurt gas mileage because they are heavier and have more rolling resistance. I suggest swapping gears. It shouldn't cost more than maybe $600-$650 per axle parts and labor. Good luck!
What ever you do, don't go with bigger tires to improve fuel economy. Replace the 4.10's with 3.73's, or if your willing to wait theres a lot of talk about 3.42's or 3.55's by the first of the year. A tall gear, chip/programmer, intake, and exhaust will give you these great fuel mileage numbers everybody's talking about.
Check around and see if there's anybody that would want to swap axles with you. Someone might have 3.73s and want 4.10s. It would be a lot of work but it might end up costing you nothing but some time to swap them.

I think the diesel has an 11.5 rear and the gas has 10.5... So I don't think it will work. I have 4.10's and I get high teens and sometimes low 20's. But I drive slow and easy. I thought about changing gears, but it's too much. Good luck though. Some people say that 19.5" wheels help with overall MPG. I'll stay with 4.10's though (Yes, I wish I had taller gears. I don't tow anything heavy.)
Somebody on this site did their homework and I think if you go to a set 0f 285's are the same weight as the stock 265 and they would change your ratio. When people refer to getting worst fuel mileage with bigger tires they are getting huge tires, That will drop your mileage search the site it can be down with tires with out losing fuel mileage
