They can be a bit tough. What I did that worked very well was to take an old flathead screwdriver and grind the tip of it down so that it came much more to a fine edge. Kinda like a long-tapered chisel. Then you can take a rubber mallet or small hammer and gently slide it with light taps under the tapered end of the snap ring. The ring will just compress then and basically fall out. The key is having a fine enough edge on the screwdriver to get it between the turbo housing and the snap ring.

Keep in mind that the turbo housing is very soft aluminum and you can easily drive your new fabricated 'chisel' right into the housing if you're not careful!

BTW, don't try to use a regular chisel - the point is way too broad and you'll never get it BETWEEN the ring and the turbo housing - that's the key.

After you are done, be sure to wipe out any debris / chips of aluminum if you happen to nick the housing - you don't want them sucked into the turbo!

Good luck and hope this helps.

Its gonna be a pain. Where the space between the snapring is, start there with a screwdriver, use a hammer to encourage it, but be careful to NOT scoure the turbo. Once you get it in, begin to pry it using a twisting motion. Use the another screwdriver to begin prying behind it, and move your way around. eventually you'll get it out.

OK, so I've kinda chiseled my way to where I can a flathead in-between the snapring and the silencer ring....but all I'm doing when I try to twist or pop it out its mangeling up the silencer ring so that I dont have anything to put pressure against....

Any ideas?

Use the flat head SD to get under the ring at the point of the gap in the ring. Once the SD is under the ring use the pliers to grab hold of the ring and pull it from the turbo. I have done two or three this way.

Well, realize there is a groove it sits in, you need to pry from the bottom of the ring and twist it upwards so you can get it out of the groove. Going behind it will mangle it. If you aren't worried about putting it back in you can use some pliers and yank it out, but it won't be fun. !st time is always the hardest, once you've done one it all becomes clockwork...

Thumbs up

^^ What he said. It took me almost an hour to get it out of my '06, but on my '04, the second time around was much easier. About 10 minutes.

Alright then...yeah thats the issue I'm having is getting under it to get it out of its groove....

I got some fancy snap-ring pliers but there's no "holes" that I can see to pull it out....

I dont know if my flathead is "fine" enough either to get in there as well...might be SOL....but she's coming out...

I could not get the ring to budge either, after trying for 30+ min.

I finally just took some needle nose pliers and ripped the thin metal silencer out, which took under 1 minute.....

the snap ring has a beveled tip to it, one end is beveld forward / the opther edge is beveled back \ if you are having a hard time getting the screwdriver in there, try going after the other side of the gap, one side is easier to get at than the other. take your time, don't slip.

I used a big fish hook held with some vice grips, it couldn't have been easier. Just slip the point in under the end of the ring and run around the circumferance, 3 seconds total.

as mikmaze said, go after the beveled side that you can get a small screwdriver under, get it to come out of the groove with one screwdriver just enough to get the other one in there to keep it from popping back into place then work around pulling the ring out of the groove.

I drilled a small hole in one end of the retaining ring before I decided to reinstall it to make it much easier if I decide to take it out again.

Its amazing how much louder it is....its awesome! It's not so much of a whistle though....its a "whhhoooossssshhhhh" sound....hehe, awesome

Pretty freakin' sweet....sounds like an F-16 taking off...
