Cam shaft strictly for mileage??

Does a new cam shaft make sense strictly from a mileage perspective? I know its costly, but looking at putting 500K on this truck. Thoughts?

If you gained a 1/2 MPG it would pay for itself twice.

Total savings figured at 3 bucks a gallon is over 2200 bucks.

Diesel Power Mag installed a PDR cam on a HPCR truck and got 2.1mpg increase if I remember correctly. That was towing & empty.

So I guess the questoin is how much MPG gain are you truly looking at real world? And is this in conjunction with say a max mileage module or will they negate each other?

why would the module negate the cam? its controlling rail pressure/timing... cam is creating more air.

Cam is also changing timing events. But both would be ok together.

Timing is what I was referring to with the cam and the mileage module. Figure they are both working ont he same principles just once is electronic versus mechanical.

What is a cam running for a HPCR truck, on the average? Around a grand?

Would you have to change the tappets as well?

Talk to Don above, he sells one of the most popular cams around, the Helix cams at http://f1diesel.com/.
Here is a old thread I found re: cams at competion diesel com. http://www.competitiondiesel.com/for...hp/t-9358.html
I've read that they also lower the peak at which you have max torque, help spooling the turbo, help egts, and can help mileage. The only reason that we have the cam that we do is for emissions reasons.
