Question Calling all 48RE experts . . .

OK. I'm somewhat of a newby on this board, so bear with me. I used to own (see sig.) an F250 with the 4R100 tranny. Now, this tranny was certainly no prize. However, for about $3500 there is a shop in Arkansas (BTS) that rebuilds them to be absolutely bulletproof. It was fairly common practice for folks with the Ford tranny to just live with the less-than-stellar stock transmission until such a time as it failed. Then, have the BTS transmission installed (exchanged) and never have to worry about it again.

Fast forward to now. I have the Dodge on order (again, see sig.) with the 48RE. As compared to the other two major mfrs., this is probably the worst transmission of the mix (please no flames for this statement). So, now I am wondering, who is the "BTS" of the Dodge world? Assuming there is one, can I again wait until the stocker fails and then "upgrade" to the beefy rebuilt? Finally, if one exists, how much will it cost if and when I do this?

Sorry for the long post, but I have a feeling other Ford ex-patriots are going to be interested in this as well (at least those unwilling to get the 6-speed).

OH YEAH, I almost forgot . . . this won't really be a big issue for the first 7yrs/70k mi thanks to DC's superior warranty.

I only have experience with DTT so that's all I can comment on. DTT is awesome. Go with DTT or ATS. Either on will be fine.

NJMurvin,

If you head over to the www.dieselram.com site and look in the 3 rd gen forums, there is some very good 47 and 48re info. from a 25 year tranny technician....

Also, you will have to go a LONG ways to find anyone with more auto knowledge than Bill K at DTT....

http://www.dieseltrans.com/dodge/index.htm

Check out the forums....some very good reading.

Don't be blinded by the light, there are other GREAT trans builders other than DTT!
Do your homework and check out all the companys, talk to as many people as you can, take a ride with with somebody that has a ATS,DTT,GOEREND,SUNCOAST,or other, and make the call yourself!I have driven most of them and all have their strong and weak points.Just my $.02 on this!

OK. Let's assume I go with an ATS setup. It looks like for the transmission and TC it would come to about $3500 total. Would I need anything else? What would be the typical cost to (1) R&R the tranny (2) ship the new stuff to me and return the cores? Oops, never mind on the shipping. I just noticed that Bellflower Transmission is the spotlighted dealer for ATS and they're about 60 miles from me. So, approximately how much in labor to R&R the transmission and TC?

Thanks,
Neil

Can one purchase the parts for a bulletproof tranny build and do it themselves or geta local tranny guy to do it? I am wonderiing because I contnue to hhear this 48RE is crap unless you are running a stock setup. I plan on a whole lot more than stock but $4k for a tranny build seems painfull. What are the weak parts inside this cheezy unit?

Yes, $4k is a lot to sheel out. I plan on buying the parts over the life of the warranty, then have the parts installed on a rebuild.

TC, VB, thrust washer, etc.

I don't think this new tranny gets near enough credit. We have been selling them since last January and we have sold a pile of em, not one has been back in the shop with so much as a hiccup. It's a hell of an improvment over the old "boat anchor" 47re. I actually like the 48re better than an Allison. I got an Alli over at the Chevy store laying on the floor right now due to massive internal failure's at only 31k. I can't say the same for a 48re. I don't know when enough is gonna be enough for you guys as far as power goes. The 600/48re's with 4.10 gears will pull a house down. Can't we just leave well enough alone?

Guys, stop cheerleading. We either give him the information he needs in terms of technical questions, or we don't give him any at all.
