Bypass Filters

Does anyones bypass oil filter keep the soot out of oil on 3rd gen cummins 5.9 liter. From everything I see the oil is still black with soot.

I have the FS 2500 and it is still black, even when I let it run for afew and check the oil level, but I have sent in 2 oil samples and the soot level is still really low. I send it in after 8k or so. I use AMSOIL
15w 40 heavy duty diesle and marine.

They do work. I have the Amsoil BK-11 kit. Oil is black, but not as bad as other diesel engines I've worked on. 6 month and 10,000 miles on the oil too. (Amsoil 15w-40 heavy duty diesel and marine also.)

I run Amsoil 15w40 diesel and marine with an amsoil filter in the stock location. I am planning on trying to go 25k on this oil... I've gone 8k, and am getting ready to do my first sample.
I will be running a bypass eventually.

I put 25k on RP oil with the Oilgaurd bypass when I had my 97 and the UOA still showed really low soot and good oil condition but it was nearly black. Craig

I run Delo 400 on the Amsoil BMK-11 and it is always black...but not as black in the early stages right after a fresh oil change. Dropped the soot numbers on UOA as well.

Premo Bypass

I'm running a Premo bypass oil filter and Amsoil 15W-40 diesel and marine lubricant and the oil is black but the 2 oil analysis I have had done so far shows everything to be in good order. I have about 12,000 miles on the clock with no wild mods.

My oil seems to never turn black.
It starts to turn right at 7500 miles, which is when I change it. I have read over and over that this is not the "norm".

pik your truck does not have the 3rd injection pulse like the 04.5 up you have it easer than them the frantz is the only bypass filter that can filter good enough to keep the oil from getting black but the oil is filtered below 5 microns where the carbon wear occurs in the bypass filters mentioned above most trucking company's are using a 5 or 6 % soot level to determine oil change interval all of the trucks come with bypass filters installed , also the dirtier a bypass filter is the better it filters the same with the fuel filter on the bypass filter run it until it clogs up before change on the fuel filter add a Gage and change when the pressure drops about 4 lbs under load saves money and works better

i run the amsoil bmk-11 single bypass set up- like stated earlier-my oil still turns black too, i think it has to do with the 3rd injection event. i run amsoil 15-w-40 oil- and i get 20,000 miles between oil changes.

You indicate that the "frantz" Filtere is the only one that can keep the oil from turning black. Do you have any info on them?

You also seem to indicate that while the oil is black the fs2500, and amsoil filters do good enough. Is that what you meant?

The Franz "TP" filters will not keep your oil from turning black either. My buddy has one on his 06, I've watched him change his oil, new TP, drive less than 10 miles and have the oil pitch black.... same with mine with the Amsoil BMK-11.
I think the Amsoil filters less than 2microns absolute, not sure what the Franz is, but it's probably similar however you have to balance cost (amsoil more) vs ease (Franz is a pain in the butt and messy) Amsoil/FS2500 are spin on. Either way, they are much better than stock 15micron filters

I like my bypass from FS and the oil still is black however, it is not quite as black as without it. It gives me peace of mind that I am doing what I can to make the engine last as long as possible. My FS is not spin on BTW, there is a long bolt that goes through the middle. I just undo it and a light tap on the housing and presto.

yes, the third injection pulse soot problems caught the filter people off guard and were slow to get workable products to the market amsoil was one of the first to redesign there bmk-11 kit to work they use a ae after the filter # to distinguish it from the older one amsoil is to pricey for me , that is why i only run a couple of them about ten years ago i started making my own kits using by pass filters that we stock for our large trucks on our 06's we had to change to a better cartridge and since none of our big trucks were new enough to have the soot problem i chose a filter from luberfiner #lf9750 oil analysis shows the same reduction as amsoil, the reason we quit using the frantz is it clogs up to fast ill bet the ones using them on 04.5 up are changing them every 2000 miles we could only get about 3500 on 12 valve

Yep, and if your chaning your TP every 2-5K miles, you are adding a quart of new oil every time, don't quite see the savings.. benefit of better filtering, yes, but thats alot of oil to keep adding...
