Generally, most threads end up listing the three best as:

1. Brakesmart. Uses a solid state pressure transducer that T's into the truck to apply trailer brakes in direct proportion to fluid pressure. Draw back is that they are high $$$.

2. Jordan Ultima. Uses a linkage to measure movement of the truck's brake pedal. Once set up properly, they are smoother than inertia sensing units, and cheaper than the Brakesmart.

3. Technocia Prodigy. Generally thought of as the best of the inertia/deceleration sensing controllers.

Avoid the timer based controllers, since they apply the same braking in an easy stop in town as they do at a panic stop from freeway speed...

The truck I bought last fall has the Prodigy in it. Will I have to make any settings when I start towing, or does it pretty well do that for me?

You'll have to play around with it a bit to get it where you want it. I like my trailer to brake fairly aggressively, so I spend a lot of time fine-tuning it while driving, to keep it just below the threshold of locking up. You'll find that when you set it to brake aggressively at highway speeds, it'll tend to lock up easily at low speeds.

As you can tell, a lot of people around here are using the prodigy, including myself...I feel like it gave me the best bang for the buck, I didn't want to shell out all that cash for a brakesmart
