boost pressure

just a quick question about boost levels. i normally live in colorado at about 5000 elevation, and my boost gauge will read about 34 when floored. i recently am in galveston, and now my boost comes up to 40 psi would this be from the elevation change? also i am running an edge EZ.

I think it is from the EZ, mine stock spikes to 34psi. With pressure box it would hit 39psi. With Edge Juice/Attitude I have the max boost set to 36 and it backs off all the time hitting the 36psi. I am in Houston.

Maybe there is something affected by the difference in pressure, I dont know have the knowledge to answer that one.

The only guess I could make is that the computer that controls the wastegate may need to adjust to the different pressure or maybe the solenoid that actually opens the wastegate is stuck. I have seen posts about the solenoids sticking.

Yes, lower elevation means MORE air. I noticed this a lot long time ago when I had a 87 Ninja 1000R. I put a stage 3 kit on (larger jets, bigger air box, gearing, more stuff). I loved the way the bike handled around VT. I then drove to NH and rode up Mt. Washington (about 6000 ft). and the bike started running like crap (less air). Ended up having the girlfriend and I push the bike that last 200 yards due to me not wanting to rev the **** out of it to get it to move. It just wouldn't idle at all. I was revving around 4000 rpm to get the thing to even more a little.

So yes, the higher you are, the less air there is for our trucks. Also even on colder days your truck might run a little better due to air being denser.

Nuttymopar,

I agree, but that doent explain why mine is at 34psi normally, his is 34psi normally in completely different altitudes. It still must have something to do with the computer controlling the wastegate.

Does anyone know what the computer uses to determine when to open the wastegate? Is it boost pressure, atmospheric pressure, exhaust or what and what is the stock parameter set to. Just curious.

Those with the newer trucks, 2nd & 3rd gens, just have to much electronic crap that drives your trucks.

But then again. I am surfing this section as I am thinking about trading my 1st gen in for a 2005, I only hope... no I think PRAY is a better word. I'm surfing to see if the 3rd gens have any problems I should be aware of as I think I might look a little while in Boston this weekend.... before heading to the Caribbean for Vacation.

Nuttymopar,

This is my first Dodge Cummins, so I can't relate to the older configurations. It does seem that the older Cummins were much easier to modify, work on, diagnose problems on and go faster than the 04.5 and up. You are at the mercy of the computer for just about everything. Some good and some BAD.

RamWheelsBy4,

The electronic wastegate on the 04.5 and up motors is controlled by the trucks ECU and controls to typically around 30-34psi stock. Other factors including barometric pressure, air temperature, and transmission strategies also play a role in the wastegate actuation.

With our new Eliminator power module we have taken over control of the wastergate electronically and allow for user adjustment on the fly of the wastegate from around 25psi to 45psi of boost. There is no longer a need to cut hoses and put in boost elbows to get a fixed boost value like previous gen 3 motors. Just plug in 2 connectors and your done, so in some cases electronics make modification easier.

Wow 45 psi? How much boost is safe for these stock turbos? For that matter, when does the head blow off?
