Boost gauge tap?

Where are you guys tapping into for your boost gauge? The intake manifold, or the tube between the intercooler and the intake manifold? Or some other place? Thanks!

A Boost Bolt came with my gauge kit, the bolt replaces one of the bolts in the intake assembly - pull out the old bolt, install the Boost Bolt, and you're done - there are pics on this website where it goes, try a search for Boost Bolt;

Note: I think it was $5 from Piers....that was a while back....

Did you remove the intake to tap it? Or did you leave it on? I would assume that very few if any metal (aluminum) shavings would get into the intake. If you removed the intake, did you need to replace the gasket? Or is it re-usable? Thanks!

from what I understand, no, you dont have to remove the intake, just remove a bolt, and thread the boost bolt in its place, then hook up your boost tube, and your done

Well, got it done....did it like Blue600. Works fine. I added grease to the drill bit to try and catch the shavings, and then added some gease to the tap to catch more filings (next to none). Thanks for the tips guys. I do not know how to post pics on the board, and if I did, I would share. If someone can tell me how to or walk me through it, I can get some pics. I also made my own gauge holder. Looks SHARP!!!!!!!!

It sounds like you didn't remove the intake. That was gutsy. Any metal you missed could end up in the cylinders. I'm pretty sure most people that tap the intake manifold pull it out first just for that reason.

I used a greased drill bit and tap when I installed my pyro probe. Afterwards I stuck my telescoping magnet in the hole and was able to get a fair amount of metal shavings out of the exhaust manifold.

The boost bolt that many above speak of requires no drilling/tapping.

What I did was unbolt the boost tube from the intercooler leading to the intake. Then I shoved a rag into the manifold passed where I was going to drill the hole. Once I drilled the hole with the grease on the drill bit, AND the tap, I removed the rag, and THEN stuck a shop vac up into the intake manifold and vacuumed out any shavings that may have been in there. Worked out great.

its not that bad...people go overboard on being careful tapping the intake and exhaust manifold when installing gauges. I didnt grease a bit. I drilled most of the way through, blew out the aluminium shavings, drilled the rest and ran a magnet down the hole. Tapped it with a greased tap. Never had a problem. I have tapped a few different intakes the same way without a problem. Same with exhaust manifolds for EGT gauges.

Mine came without a boost bolt, so I just removed one bolt (seem to remember it was the front inboard bolt) drilled a 1/8" thru the middle of it and then brazed the fitting on to the bolt head. Reinstalled the bolt and screwed the nipple into it and that was it. It was simple and fast. If I were to do it again I would use a steel fitting instead of the brass fitting and weld the steel fitting to the bolt head.
