Black Smoke question

One question probably dumb but will blowin the black smoke hurt or mess up the motor in anyway. Like does the black smoke create inside the motor and cover everything or just inside the manifold. I just wanted to know if it makes the motor inside all dirty with the black stuff like it does the outside of the exhaust. thanks

That's a good question. Don't know the answer. My guess is it'll soot up the oil somewhat more than normal (which I consider too much anyway..) Don't think it'll hurt anything as long as you keep your oil clean, change all your filters regularly.

The more smoke you make the more soot you will put into the oil and the higher you will drive the EGT's.

Will it hurt anything? Well, if it would there are a bunch of 12V mosquito killers that are on death's door step.

It will probably take a few miles of the total life of your truck, annoy the heck out of the greenies, and foul the air a bit more, but, keep the EGT's in the sanity range and change the oil a bit more often and you should not see any issues.

I change mine every 7500 and I pour a decent amount of smoke every now and again. No big deal. If you want to burn the deposits out of your engine, go find a nice long grade and do about 70 up it. In fact, pull something up a nice long grade. Get your engine temp. up to the ~210 *F range and keep it there. Work the engine and your soot will be completely burnt out.

Your best bet is to do an oil analysis and go by those results. Its really variable how you drive and how dirty the oil gets. Analysis is the only way to know for sure if its ability to lube is decreasing.

Exactly.... and that's why I just dropped off a sample at UPS to be sent to Blackstone. Cheap insurance and good documentation in case anything should happen to my beloved Cummins while under warranty...

as previously mentioned, work your truck. take long grades at high mph and better yet tow at high mph on long grades. you can feel the difference driving your truck afterwards....it runs better!

That works to keep the carbon build up to a minimum. It will not help the sooting of the oil. The more black smoke you make the more soot you have the potential to put into the engine. Working the engine hard will not change or dissipate that potential as it is a result of the 3 injection events and the valve timing.

i didn't mean to refer to black smoke, just how the truck runs in general. to me black smoke is black smoke, it's fun! i saw a cummins coming today with a fairly young guy behind the wheel and i let out a good puff of black just to say howdy and the guy waved back at my gesture! love it.
