Big Dually Tires

Hey guys,

I have done some searching on the site and can't quite come to a conclusion. I want bigger tires on my 04.5 dually. Is it true that the biggest I can go without spacers is 285/70/17? If so, who makes an E rated tire in that size? Or can I just go with a tire with a high D rating? Thanks !

yes that is the biggest you can go without spacers. my dad has some cooper sst in that size and he loves them. you can go with any tire in a high D rating or E. dont really matter but yes that size is the biggest

I thought we could not fit 285's in the 3rd gen duallies? If we can, woohoo! I need tires bad and was about to settle on the stockers. I thought 2nd gens could fit 285's under the rear but we couldn't. I guess I'll wait to see how it works for you. I don't want to go spacers. I started looking hard into Rickson's.

It depends on the tire. I couldn't fit 265 70 17 Cooper s/t's on my rims without the sidewalls touching when loaded....1/4 inch empty. You need enough space so that rocks don't get wedged in and boom.

i will take some pics of my dads truck and post them on here. mabey something is just wrong with his truck then cuase he has 285s on it, cooper sst and they come very very very close to touching when loaded witha very very heavy load but other than that, havent had one problem with them and he has just over 47k miles on them.

I'm very excited to see this. Why hasn't others tried 285's on the 3rd gen dually?

I have 285's on my 03 there MT/R's so they have pretty good side lugs. I did run them without a spacer at first with no rubbing, but you have to watch tire pressure pretty close. Im sure with less agressive tires it wouldn't be a problem. Hope that helps some.

That's good news. How close were your MTR's to each other w/o spacers? I'm leaning more towards a less aggressive tire like the Michelin LTX or so. Who makes a E-rated 285?

I have 285 MT/R's and they are super close w/o a spacer, and will rub when towing or with a decent amount of weight in the bed. A one inch spacer would be perfect with these tires, however I don't know where you could get some, or if they even make them. Two inch spacers are deffinetly overkill for the 285's, I just put a couple grade 8 washers on each stud between the wheels, has worked out well over the last 60k miles.

As RatherBeMuddin said they are super close, maybe an 1/8" space with them aired up pretty good. I ran them for about a week with out a spacer but it was to much of a hassel so i threw some on just to be on the safe side.

I'm running 265 70 17 Buckshots and have about 1/4 when loaded, about 15,000 lbs with no problems. I know a couple guys running 315's with 2" level kit up front and 2" spacers inbetween duals.

Yep, That is close. Too close for off road for me....one little pebble and two expensive tires gone at the sideway. Washers are an idea but the tire shops definitely won't do it. I scale so 1/4" won't pass inspection. ks

I guess I'll stay with the stock size. This sucks. I was hoping for a taller tire.
