BD Diesel Killer B

Anyone have any experience with this turbo? I read a lot of reviews and comments on other sites but didn't see much here (probably because the search doesn't recognize BD or B )

I ordered one and am going to try it. The price is significantly cheaper than an II or HTT turbo and BD turbos seem to have a good reputation. I believe the specs on it are 63/65/14 and it moves 1060 cfm. I called and spoke with BD before I ordered it and they recommended it over the special. Just curious what other people thought of it.

Their turbo guy is a good one and knows his stuff.

This is a "compromise" turbo between the special and the super B.

I prefer a 12cm housing on the exhaust for this turbo as it starts about 150 rpm sooner.

But, to answer your question, it is a good turbo. The special is a little too big to tow with and the killer b will tow well. The super b is just too small now for the newer trucks.

That's the way I understood it. I was considering the Special until I called and talked to them. The Killer, from what I've read, should be very drivable on the street while still being able to tow. With the setup I have now and the stock HE341 my temps are getting hot quickly and I'd peg the pyrometer if I did a WOT run and have to watch it when towing. The stocker has 283,000 miles on it and is starting to squeal a bit so it seemed like the time to upgrade.

Hopefully this will be a good fit for my truck. I ordered it through Thoroughbred Diesel and it should arrive on Tuesday. I'm just curious because it doesn't seem like very many people on here run them.

No they don't... but it is more about lack of knowledge than anything else.

Engineered Diesel also makes a similar turbo using a custom 68mm turbine wheel that is popular currently.

The turbo arrived Monday and I installed it Tuesday afternoon. I've put about 200 miles on it so far and I'm really pleased with the way it drives. It spools almost as quickly as stock and seems to make the truck have effortless power. I find myself looking down and realizing that I'm hauling it without trying to. It's not the jerky, set you back in your seat effect I was expecting. The power comes on smoothly and quickly. My EGTs are about 200* cooler at cruising speeds and 300* lower at WOT. I haven't towed with it but based on the performance empty I would expect it to be a very good turbo for towing. I do notice that it seems to make more power than stock with less boost. I believe the wastegate is set at 40psi.

Install wasn't that bad. I was planning on doing it without removing the manifold but quickly changed my mind once I got into it. Of course, when I took the downpipe off of the cast elbow the flange on the downpipe cracked and now I need a new downpipe. Other than that I didn't have any issues. The oil fill line is to the side just slightly but not more than 10* or so. I left it like it was since the manual said anything less than 20* was fine.

That is precisely how a well matched turbo should behave.

Good to hear! I bet the truck has a deeper tone... I can always tell if a person has a after market turbo, they sound so much better... ecspecially with a after market exhaust and really easy str8 piped..

The truck definately has a deeper tone to it and more drone at interstate speeds. Some of the drone can probably be attributed to the cracked downpipe. The "lip" of the downpipe cracked in the bend pretty significantly. It's under the V clamp now but it's not sealed very well. My new downpipe should be here tomorrow and then I get to wrestle with getting the exhaust apart on Saturday!

This turbo seems very well matched to my truck with the mods I have and my use of the truck. It's my DD and doesn't tow very often but it is used to pull trailers from time to time and wanted to maintain that ability.

I got terrible drone after I changed mine. A glasspack after the DP fixed it. Craig

I'm really pleased with it. I've put close to 600 miles on it so far and have really enjoyed it.

I'm certainly not an expert, but you might need some more fueling upgrades before this is the correct turbo for you. I don't have big injectors but they do make a significant difference and a lack of fuel would cause spooling issues. I also have stacked electronics and a lift pump upgrade.

I called and spoke to BD before I ordered it and they were very helpful and knowledgeable. I would suggest giving them a call to see what they suggest. I ordered mine Thoroughbred Diesel because it was a couple hundred cheaper than anywhere else I could get it and they shipped it for free.

OK, figured i would chime in.... i just ordered the Killer B turbo today from Thoroughbred Diesel... i am excited i finally pulled the trigger to swap out my factory turbo. I have owned 3 cummins diesels and this is the first one i have ever changed the factory turbo on. So i am excited and nervous to see how i like it.
That being said, i have the stock injectors and fuel system so i am thinking i might be alittle bit under fueled for this turbo but it gives me some room to grow in the future to some 50hp tips... i have the bully dog crazy larry and from my understanding its one of the more aggressive programmers out there so hopefully it will do a decent job spooling the turbo and make it do able until i spring for injector. I will post again once i recieve it and get it installed... i have a friend who has a connection at a local dyno shop so hoping to dyno for a before and after.. not sure if doing just the turbo will increase my power being that i have the stock fuel system... but... wouldnt hurt to see some numbers before and after.

OK... I got the new turbo in and have driven a few hundred miles... this is my first turbo swap and WHOA.. it sounds 100% different.. the factory turbo had i high pitch whistle and this has more of a low whining noise, best way i could describe it is that it sounds more like the whine of a supercharger on a car.. is this a normal type of noise for these turbos?
i have only driven a few hundred miles but so far there only seems to be just a tiny bit more lag then the factory turbo and seems to pull harder on the top end.. so pretty smooth all around... but now i am throwing an over boost code P0234 and it feels as if it starts turning the fuel back.. i cleared it and it comes back very quickly and back to a defueled state.. any suggestions? the BD Killer B comes with a boost fooler and i installed it as instructed.
*on a side note i am running my Bully Dog Crazy Larry so it doesnt fool or control waste gate... any suggestions?
