Automatic starters!

Up here in the great white north winter will soon be arriving and my lazy *** wants a command start for those cold mornings. I figure let the truck warm up for awhile and I'll have a coffee.

Any suggestions or experience is greatly appreciated!!

Did you get the security package with your rig? If so, you can't use remote start.
I found out after I bought mine. Was really depressed about it on them cold days in the low 50's

My Arctic Start system works just fine (but I still don't beilieve the 1 mile range that they claim!) and yes I have the security package

Do a search as this issue was discussed in depth last spring.

Ken

ps. Welcome aboard!

I've been installing 12volt goodies in vehicles for 19 years and yes, you can have a remote start that will work perfectly fine, it just costs a little more and is a little more work for the installer. If you have two keys, you will need a third one that will be installed in a transponder based bypass module and buried under the dash were no one can access it. When the remote start is activated, the bypass module gets energized and it takes the signal from the key and brings it up to the ring antenna around the ignition switch. This process fools the vehicle into thinking that a valid sentry key is in the ignition when it is actually in the bypass module. When I do a install in a vehicle like this, I add $50 to the price of the system to cover the cost of the bypass module and the extra labor. The third key will run roughly around $40 or more depending on how bad the dealer wants to spank you. One other note, since the bypass module only gets energized when the remote start is activated, the sentry key anti-theft system still works normal all other times.

How about the Viper systems? What's your opinion on them?

http://www.electronicscity.com/produ...roducts_id=554

They are the only product name that I am familiar with.

Thanks!

VIPER is a name. You can buy a very similar system to that one in DEI's Hornet name for about $130 wholesale! DEI or Directed Electronics Inc. have products under VIPER, RATTLER, SIDEWINDER, HORNET, VALET and many others. The products as far as quality goes are very similar. The VIPER name usually gives you a couple of extra features to make you think that you got more than a name for the extra $$.

MOPAR has just released the parts for the RAM trucks that adds a remote start ability to the factory system even if you have the SENTRY key. The MOPAR system adds a special interface that acts like as a SENTRY key when the remote start is activated, in fact it has a unique ID like each key and is programmed into the system just like a key. Check it out here:
http://www.mopar.com/dodge/access.html

Its under the security/locks options.

I kinda figured that Viper was a product name and all. Was just curious as to the quality and so forth. When I did a search, I came up with that web link. Man they gots lots a goodies on that site....

This is really something (remote start) that I think I am going to do, just need to decide on which one.

Thanks for the info. Good thread!

I just put in the Bulldog Securities Deluxe 62I into my truck. It costs alittle bit over $100 and has remote start, keyless entry and alarm. It was a real PITA deciphering all of the wire diagrams, but I finally figured it out. Just make sure you use the right ignition/accessory wires so that your heater and AC work when in remote start mode.

90 bucks from this place. The wiring kit is twice that, but still not bad considering it's OEM. I'm gonna have to have them add that to my truck when it gets here.

That's slick, but what about the little pre-ignition warm up we're supposed to do, especially on cold days? I guess I should have known better than to listen to my salesman...

My Viper ties into the Wait to Start light, won't let you start it till it goes out.

Can't go wrong with one of the units from DEI.
Just a suggestion, do what I did and let a qualified installer put it in for you, they know all the little tricks to make it go quicker, and the gotcha's to look out for on particular vehicles.

On a lot of the newer trucks, you cant tie into the wait to start light. On these trucks, I use a Prestige remotestart by Audiovox. It in the same league as DEI as far as quality. The thing I like about the Prestige on diesels is you can program the delay time when you install it. 5sec.,10sec.,15sec.,20sec. for delay before it cranks the starter.

I got the Astro Start 2WA. Waits for the 'wait to start" light to go out. Ties in to existing alarm. Includes door lock/unlock so you can do away with the MOPAR door lock controller. Programmed to start the truck at -15*F below and run it for 10 minutes (adjustable). 2-way LCD controller that tells me whether the truck cranked or not, whether the doors are locked or unlocked. Panic button. What else....oh, 1/4 mile range. Was very expensive though, almost $700 installed. The key chain remote could have used recessed buttons. I keep mashing buttons in my pocket.
