ATS vs ARP head studs

The ATS studs are listed as drop in no tapping needed. I have seen posts about bottom tapping the arp studs. Thoughts?

When i did my arp studs, i bottom tapped, but not that far at all. I think they could really just go right in, i had all but maybe 2 or 3 threads engaged before tapping. its really not difficult to bottom tap, just a little more time consuming.

Ya x's two, whats the difference? Do the ARP's go in deeper ie. bottome tap? Or does it even matter which ones you use?

Im not gonna have 1k hp or anything, but possibly shooting for the 650hp range.

I believe ATS studs are A1's which have a tapered bottom. ARP's have threads all the way to the bottom of the stud. By bottom tapping with the ARP's you can gain up to 1/4 inch of depth, IMO it's well worth the extra time.

my feelings are, if you are going through all that to get the studs in, you might as well go all the way and get it over with. it will only take an extra 5 mins for each stud. just take your time, have a beer or two, and tap 'em.

From an engineering point of view, a bolt reaches it's maximum thread holding capacity when it has about 1.5x the depth as it thread with. I.E. a 1/2" threaded bolt will have it's max thread strength at 3/4" deep. I'm all about over kill. If I was going to do it, I would bottom tap. More is always better. Not just that I would sleep better at night knowing that I went the extra mile & if something did happen, I would break something else first!

When head studs are being installed do you have to remove the entire head? Or do you go one by one?

Also if you don't remove the head how do you get the chips out of the hole after you run the bottoming tap through it?

In reality only a couple of the studs need to be tapped further...Most go right to the bottom. I'd tap the holes that need it...I dont like to tap a hole that doesn't need it. I'm sure someone will chime in. KS

You can do it without removing the head. I use a taper tap to get to the bottom of the hole, and then follow it up with a true bottom tap. I use a vacuum cleaner with a small hose attached to the end, and then I spray brake clean down the hole until the vacuum sucks clean. It gets all the chips and oil out of the hole. I would recommend applying a little oil to the block end of the stud to prevent rust.
