Anyone Have the Big Exhaust 5" on Their 3rd Gen??

I'm wondering what the advantage of a 5" exhaust would be over a 4" exhaust. Specifically, the 5" Big Exhaust over the 4" DPPI exhaust.

Does anyone here have the Big Exhaust? Is it straight piped or do you have the muffler? If no muffler, how loud is it? How does it sound? What about drone??

Thanks for the input.

Hoss, I wouldn't worry about going with the 5". It's to big for a stock, or near stock truck. I think all it would do is make it noiser. Just go with the 4". I've heard a 5" and it didn't sound right.

BigBlue, I don't think Hoss NEEDS a 5" exhaust. It's the Big Kahuna Factor, you know, big bad and overkill just 'cause it's cool, and just because you can

I had a 5" on my somewhat Bombed '01.5 and loved it This truck I decided to go dual exhaust this time which I haven't done yet.

I have a 5" straight pipe with 6" tip setup. What happens after you have it for a while, at least with me is you get used to it. It sounds incredibly good at idle and moderate pedal but hard acceleration is like a big loud continuous tuba sound.

I'll be leaving mine straight. Just like the sound too muck and the reactions I get.

I have a lot of pictures in my gallery.

I have one one my truck running the muffler. I don't like the sound at idle nearly as much as my '01 with a 4" system, but going getting into the throttle I think it sounds better. At low speed light throttle you get a lot of turbo whistle, so that sounds pretty cool, too. If you wick the throttle at an idle it gives a nice bark. It looks pretty good snaking out the back, and so far not a hint of rust.

Pipe Size

Hoss,

From numerous issues of the TDR as well as other info that has been published over the years a 5 inch isn't necessary till you're at or over 500 RWHP. Plus a lot of folks complain about the sound level too. If you really want the five inch we can get you it for you at very competitive prices, but for 99% of owners the 4.0 inch system is going to way sufficient. Call us if you need help with any questions, were always here to help.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'll just stick with the 4" exhaust.

Now....if I could just find a sound byte of that 4" DPPI system. Mark??

5" systems aren't necessarily louder. The 5" on my '01 droned much less and was easier on the ears during a road trip than the 4" exhaust on my '03.

When you say, "save your money, I don't think it's worth it", are you referring to the 4" DPPI system or the 5" Big Exhaust system?

i have bd's 5" system on my truck. in the cab, it isn't much louder with the windows up, and with them down, it sounds pretty good. outside at idle it's a nice low rumble, and at full tilt, outside it is loud ... i have an idea to tweek the exhaust a bit [just an idea, if it works, i will post about, if not, i won't say a word ]

just need some parts to tune it

i personally do not think it is worth the money. i had gauges before and after, and the cost per advantage per annoyance is just not there, at least at my level of modification. the factory system is really not that bad unless you are going for big hp numbers. i truely think i wasted my money. some others may argue my point, some others may say amen. but my hindsight is 20/20 and i have seen no benifit and have used two different systems.

Ahhhh....I see. So you think you're better off just staying with the stock exhaust then. I kind of wondered myself....is there much difference between a 3.5" exhaust (which is what I think the factory system is) and a 4" exhaust?? I suppose THAT is the question of the day.

Still though....what about the stock muffler? I understand that it's pretty restrictive??
