Does he have gauges?? If so, then he can set it on 100hp and watch egts and tranny temps... as long as those remain normal he is good to go. If not, then drop down to the "tow" setting which is #2 on Smarty Jr.

An 03 standard output engine might have a 47RE auto. If it does I wouldn't recommend more than level 2, if even that high. A manual go for the gusto until it slips and then back off.
If it's a 48RE than like soulezoo says. I wouldn't worry too much about a transmission temp guage though, but that's just me, I've towed long enough to know what and when the transmission is going to get warm.
