Are all Billet shafts bright/shiny?

I just got my Goerend Bros tranny, and the output shaft is not a bright billet? I called them and they said they use two different companies, one has bright billet, the other uses a darker steel? Has anyone had any experience with this? Does this sound right... I've never heard of any negative about Dave, quite the contrary, just double checking. 7K is alot to spend...

I did call them, and they told me that they use two different companies for their billet shafts. One company has bright billet? the other doesn't. I've just never heard of a dark billet, I thought they were all bright??? Anyone with Georend billet shafts out there that can comment?

I wouldn't worry to much. Dave will stand behind his tranny. If you break it he will make it right. I do understand your reservations though. Hopefully someone with a Goerend tranny will chime in.

Yah, I'm not really too worried.... Dave's got a great rep, thats why I went with him......I know Dave will stand behind the tranny, I was just expecting to see it as bright as the ATS flexplate...? Oh well, I'm just thrilled to have it.. can't wait to get it installed and the CP3, XZT, Flux 2's, GPD and hit the Dyno and track....

I would say it probably has something to do with heat treating. I know I use 2 vendors for the same parts. One buys his material heat treated already so when I get them they are bright and shiny. The other heat treats after machining his are always darker. Both have the same hardness so I never worry about it!

I have a fully built Goerend race tranny. My shafts are dark graphite colored (also known as "mill finish"). The 300m material used on the shafts are an aircraft-quality alloy (much superior to 4340 used on the hubs) It is heat treated at extremely high temp and control-cooled slowly. Nothing in this finishing process would leave them shinny. Only the ends are splined and they may have turned the whole shaft in the mill when they were machining the splines, thus giving it something like a 250rms (machined) type finish.....I am a steel salesman too.

wheeeew, ok breath..

I was at Dave's shop last week getting my tranny done and all of the billet input shafts he had sitting on the bench were a darker color. He told me that he gets his input and output shafts from a company called TCS, I don't recall where he gets his intermediates from.

Yep, talked with Dave, dang he's a stand up straight shootin guy. I'm going to make my way up that way just to meet him and tour his shop. He does get his billets from different companies, TCS and Sonnix (sp?), and also ATS. Some are shiny (TCS) other are blueish.

I believe its Sonnax. And billet doesn't mean bright and shiny. It means carved out of a solid piece of steel, so whatever that material is shaded, then that's the color of the piece. Of course as stated, heat treating affects color also.

yes, billets are the raw bars of steel that come out of processing at the mill. from the looks of that intermediate froma few posts above, the entire shaft has been machined giving it a shiney look, just lay it on the front porch for about 5-6 days and that will start changing....

Yes, Dave is an incredible guy, he is one of my sponsors and he has built me an full bullet-proof tranny. He took the time to go over everything about what he does and why. Ever get a chance to tour the shop I would suggest it, I haven't had the chance...
