Air filters and break-in

I want to put in either the K&N or True Flow air filter. Any advice on which, or others? Also, my service rep says to wait unitil about 30000mi. so the engine breaks in a bit first. Why??

What did the service rep say when you asked him why wait until 30000mi?

Personally go with the AMSOIL or True Flow. They are both foam oiled filters and don't have all that gauze to worry about. I myself use the AMSOIL but the info I have read on the True Flow seems to be impressive.
Just my .01 worth

Does anyone have actual (and factual) numbers on mileage, power, or both comparing stock and aftermarket air filters? I don't know if it makes any difference, but for the record, I am in a 600 2500 with less than 1000 miles. While I understand there is the breakin factor, and at this point I am not that dissapointed with my milage, but I would certainly welcome any improvements.

I just gotta say that your name is one I have needed for myself many times. And for some folks I know too.

I was thinking the same SuperGewl. I've had the K&N and I think it would take longer to dry and wouldn't get as much air. Bula- he has mentioned keeping the engine temp. up, because he thinks it won't get as much air flow. ( I'm at 10000mi. and don't want to waste $ on a stock filter.)

Sharp -stump....
Do you have a heavy trailer or 5ver? Hook it up and find some steep grades... build some heat... thats the best way to break in your Cummins. This comes straight from Cummins. You will quickly break it in and prevent blowby. If not, it could take as much as 30K miles for this to happen....
I only waited for 1k to put my BD X intake w/ K&N on, when I started towing heavy.... just my .02

Ramasaur.......
Situation being that I actually own a race shop and have built about 2000 engines now, I can understand what you are saying..the fact is that I am working late, running one in on the dyno at this very moment. It is just that this is my first ever diesel, and therefore I feel brand new. Living in the CO mtns, and hauling race cars certainly affords me the opportunity to put a load on anything I drive. I will probably creep up on it somewhat, but I have just hauled about 4-5K worth of load. I thank you and anyone else who can "break ME in".
Nuther Q......totally unrelated, but this is probably as good a place to ask as any.....How do I get my "Profile" to show with my postings?
Thanks again,
Mike

I just ordered a True Flow for my truck. Coming up on 10,000 miles now. I had a K&N in my '96 for 160,000 with no problems but if what they say is true, the True Flow is the filter to have.

Put your info into the "Signature" box in your Profile. Just learned that myself

Is the stock air filter garbage. I havent decided on any upgrades in this area yet, but I'm considering either staying stock or maybe a replacement drop in. I forget where I read it, but some aftermarket filters were letting alot of dirt into the engine. If AFE makes a direct drop in replacement I may go that route.
