Adding cruise to '04 manual

Hi list. Just purchased an '04 2500 with 6 speed. The truck did not include cruise which is something I want to install. Dodge does not currently offer this as an accessory. '03 service manual says:

"5.9L Diesel With Manual Trans.
The speed control system is fully electronically controlled
by the Engine Control Module (ECM). A
cable and a vacuum controlled servo are not
used if the vehicle is equipped with a manual
transmission and a diesel engine. This is a servo-
less system. The controls consist of two steering
wheel mounted switches. The switches are labeled:
ON/OFF, RES/ACCEL, SET, COAST, and CANCEL."

So the question.... Has anybody gotten this to work by buying and mounting the two switches mentioned above ? Does anybody know if the vehicle without factory cruise has the necessary wiring in the steering column ? If this won't work any aftermarket solutions that can be recommended ?

Thank you. Sven

I just ordered Cruise for my auto (Should work exactly the same for a 6spd I think) from www.dodgeparts.com for about $200. This is a Dodge kit, not aftermarket.

A few years ago on a new 5 speed Dakota I bought it too did not have the cruise control. At that time I discovered that Dodge do not offer this as an accesory. It is a full fledged Dodge kit. It was a breeze to install and the instructions were pretty good. The only problem was that I had to remove the air bag to install the new switches. I did it but sure was nervous. Made sure my head was well out of the way just in case. I suspect that in your case that it is still a Dodge kit as nojoverkill has said.

Hi I have installed cruise in gassers before but not a diesel. I have a new 2003 5sp. I went to the link given and the individual parts not a kit come out to $181.75 before tax or shipping. From what I understand the cruise is suppossed to tie in with the computer. Since it is individual replacement parts and not a kit would it still work since there was not a harness or pig tail to order? The dealer will sale a cruise controll aftermarket for a gasser but says the only way you can get it installed on a diesl is from the factory.

It seems to me that the Cruise control is all computer controlled so probably nothing is required except the buttons.

I got the buttons from a late model kit and plugged them in. The "CRUISE" lamp light up immediately but after I pressed it on/off a few times it wouldn't go on anymore....

Voltmeter says there is still +12V going to both of the buttons... Anyone got a clue what I might have done?

BTW, which part is the "servo" ?

njoverkill I looked at a 2001 yr with cruise and there was a 2nd cable going into the injection pump from the cruise controller. Was the cable at the injection pump hard to install? Im guessing your kit didnt come with instructions or trouble shooting guide. Hope you get it figured out.

For those seeking an answer to my question....I just finished installing the both switches on this truck and cruise works without any issues. It would appear that '04 diesels with manual transmissions come completely wired and lack only the switches themselves ( about $15 each ).

njoverkill has an auto, which means he needs to install the servo, etc. the cruise on the manual is completely controlled by the computer. not so on the auto.

Wow Im gratefull for Svenne posting. I ordered the switches for the steering wheel and it works for the manual trannys! I had two different dealers part departments tell me you couldnt add cruise. Long distance driving is great now! I ordered the parts over the web and it came out to $46.91 delivered to the door in 3 days from newmoparparts.com.

Yeah guys.

It looks like I could probably buy every single part seperately for like 200 bucks or so. That is not SO bad but...

I just hit 30K in under 4 months... I almost forgot what cruise control is... muhahaha

I just purchased a 04 ST with a manual transmission and would like in install cruise control in the truck. Are your cruise control systems still working after about 6 months? Are there any tricks or tips that would help during the install? Are the wires in the steering wheel or do I need to run them up to the switchs?

I've never removed an air bag before is there any gotcha's to watch out for?

Do you think the dealer would install the switches?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just don't want to mess anything up.

Dave.

Dave,
Turn the car off and if I were you, disconnect both batteries.

This doesn't require anything related to the airbag. The too plastic things covering the spot where the switches should be have 1 or 2 screws each that unscrew from behind the wheel then pop off. The wiring is already there. Plug them in, screw them on and you're good to go.

If the dealer does it, don't pay more than 30 minutes labor. They will probably try to charge you ridiculous amounts of money since this is a $250 option.

Just a little warning for you folks fooling around with the mechanics of the air bag, if your using a probe light make sure you don't probe the wire for the air bag, that will ground it out and POOF. I got this info from a tech that does this sort of thing so i would say it is acurate. Not sure on this but i think he said it was a yellow wire.
