5.9 vs 6.7
5.9 vs 6.7
I've had my 5.9 for some time now and am thinking about getting a newer Cummins. I don't know a whole lot about the 6.7 and am just wondering what people think about them compared to the 5.9L (master of diesels). I want to get another 6-speed and play with the tunes like I've done with my 5.9
Just looking for advise on if I should go for the 6.7 or stick with my 5.9.

I think it's a matter of opinion.......some love the 6.7 and some hate them. I think the engine is a very good one but the emissions drag it down considerably. I talked with a guy a while back who deleted, programmed, and opened up the exhaust on his lifted 6.7 and went from around 10mpg to upwards 20!!!! I can only imagine how much difference it would feel going from a 5.9 to the 2013 6.7 with over 800 lb/ft of torque......that's insane factory power in my book.
I think I'll stick with my 5.9 because of the reliability of it.....but, there again, it's my opinion.

I went from a mildly modified 01 24valve to an '08 6.7 with the 6spd manual. It had 22k on it when I bought it, bone stock. I drove it like that for about 4k miles and was very impressed with the power. Then I did full deletes.....
Holy cow!!!! That woke up a whole different animal!!! The deleted 6.7 Cummins is a monster!!! It's super quiet, runs smooth, fuel economy is amazing... and when I lay that pedal down, she roars away!!! My truck is an 8000lb hot rod!!!
I did have to install a southbend dual disc clutch to hanc\dle the power, but it was money well spent. I've now got 55k on it, and it hasn't missed a beat. I have no concerns of the longevity of my truck. I do baby it. But I've run her on some long hauls, western colorado to houma louisiana, florida, north dakota, corpus christi tx. Pulled my 8600lb camper up monarch pass on highway 50 in co with no issues.
I didn't know my dream truck was a mega cab 6.7 until I got one...

I just purchased the 2013 Ram 2500, which now has SCR and diesel exhaust fluid. I have 500 miles on it so far and did get 18MPG, hand calculated, on my second tank of fuel, which I consider pretty darn good since its got mega miles to go before its broke in.
I am taking it on a 3,000 mile trip towing about 17,000 pounds so I should have a good feel for it in about a week. Happy with it so far....

I'm keeping my 5.9 6 spd til it won't do what I want it to and that will take a LOT bigger 5er than what I have now. I figure I'm good for at least 1 more big step up in RVs. It gets 14 towing and near 20 empty and it will also flatten the mtns. Craig

i rode in a 05 nv5600 truck that was sporting a 6.7 under the hood with a cam, a small htb2 i believe it was a 62/14 and running a smarty with pretty mild setting that thing flat made my 5.9 with the same turbo look a little slow. his spool up was faster and the low end grunt of the larger displacement motor was noticible especially at the higher altitudes. with a heavy load on steep grades he had the ability to roll into the throttle and light that turbo in situations where i might have had to down shift
everything else was 05 on the truck. he ran the 6.7 inejctors, cp3 and fuel rail with 05 electronics and computer. his mileage was not any lower than it was with his 5.9 and he felt on the empty side he might have picked up a smidge
So i'm gonna say early no emissions 5.9 truck with 6.7 under the hood

I have had both I love my 6.7 the creature comforts are far and away better than any previous models. I have ridden in new Chevy's and Fords my 2012 dodge is quieter and has less wind noise than either of them. The automatic transmission is outstanding. There is really no place to fault this truck. But I have to admit I liked my 07 5.9 better I liked the body style better and I am a huge fan of the 5.9 with a 6 speed. They are both great trucks but if you are happy with the 5.9 stay in it till you have to do something else. Just my opinion.
