WOW!

From what i've found out, that indicates the fluid in the trans pan should be ~160-180. i.e. 60F drop max across the factory trans coolers.

I know on my '06 I can lock up the TC at ~30mph in T/H...Do you have T/H on your '04? Also, while sitting at a stop light, I'll shift to neutral; that'll disengage the TC and flow fluid through the cooler.

Keep in mind that their readings are on the outside of the line and there are a number of factors that can even make that reading lower than the actual fluid. My guess would be that if the line says 200, then the fluid is prob 205 - 210.

If you guys post a temp, can you say if it's in the line, test port, pan, etc...

True true...

I also thought of something else... In park or neutral, I don't think the fluid cirulates through the coolers. So, when in drive and sitting at a stop, the fluid is being heated by the antifreeze in the tranny heater/cooler. If the engine temp is 200*, then sitting in traffic in drive will circulate fluid with no real airflow trying to heat the fluid to engine temp..

Am I off on that?

It's just crazy that the temp shoots up so fast in traffic/around town..

It is my understanding that the tc is what is making it jump so fast, and when in neutral, it does circulate.

Yea dude he replaced my 48re. I have nothing to say, but good things about this guy. He's in the middle of nowhere but since he replaced my 48re it hasn't given me the first minute’s problem. Billet input, intermediate shafts, with his triple disk billet TC. Who put's a 100k warranty on a tranny? He will if you let him build it right. He did on mine and he knows I run commercial. In 2 years since I've had my 2005 it was one tranny after another till he built one to take pulling a 48' flatbed. Dropped that thing on the scales one night in Minnesota and grossed 34,820lbs. Took it just south of Dallas and never had a problem. No hunting 3rd an 4th like allot will at 30 to 40 mph. It won’t slam gears that will take out an input shaft quickly if you’re towing. I know I had one that lasted 3 weeks. It was slamming gears so hard I thought it would tear the engine and trans mounts out but left me stranded till my driver's came with another 2 trucks an trailer 5 days later to Vail Co. If you need it just contact him they will work with you to get you what you need/ can afford.

I just finished my transmission guage install on my '06 48re. I used the AutoMeter Ultra Lite Series II guage and the a-pillar from the SRT truck. I have previously installed the Mag Hytec DD pan with the temperature sender port located on the rear, midway the depth of the pan. I have only been aruond town so far here in the FL sunshine with ambient temps at 88 degrees. My guage has not gone past 160-165. So how does that sound??? I don't know what is normal for the stock pan since I previoulsy had no guage or aftermarket pan. THANKS> PCM

Ok, now I know my previous post about my tranny temp after guage install and with the Mag Hytec dd trans pan is incorrect. The previous post was around town on a short trip with the truck reaching operating temperature. I have now made 2 round trips of 100 miles each on the interstate and the temp ran just shy of 180 solo on the highway running 80mph. Again, that is the probe IN the pan on a stock truck running solo. So, I plan to use this number as a point of reference.
