There are two primary categories of stainless steel tubing: 300 series and 400 series. 400 series stainless is commonly used for automotive applications primarily because it handles heat cycling better than the 300 series. 300 series stainless becomes brittle after constant heating and cooling (which is exactly what an exhaust system does) especially in areas that incorporate welds. The issue of heat cycling is of great importance, especially in a heavy-duty application that will endure greater levels of heat than other automotive applications. Not only is 300 series stainless a poorer choice for exhaust systems, it is also more expensive and would unnecessarily increase the price of an exhaust system. 400 series stainless is not as pretty as 300 series and will have a brownish hue to it, due to the fact that it has a higher carbon content than 300 series. This means the 300 series stainless will polish up better for appearance. The carbon content in 400 series also makes it magnetic, unlike 300 series, which is a simple test to determine which series you’re dealing with. Fortunately, 400 series will handle temperatures of up to 2000 degrees without any deterioration, making it very suitable for use in exhaust systems. We use 400-series, specifically 409, for our entire exhaust systems, except the polished tip which is polished 304. That's the part that you want to look good!

good post commando, thanks..I guess I missed that on their site.
So ddp and banks have t-409 systems for a very similar price. The banks system does have the 4" elbow from the turbo down going for it, but other than that, which do people think is the better system? I've heard of no drones with banks, but a few ppl with DDP complain of drones....any others with first hand experience?

Yes, the 2003 is the same price as the older Dodges.
I am not a metallurgy specialist, might not even be able to spell it, but I would bet that Banks makes the above statement because it is cheaper to use T409 and they don't want to admit it. The DPP T304 system comes with a Lifetime warranty. In my opinion, Banks exhaust systems are the only product they market that is a decent value.

The 304 SS has a limited lifetime warranty; the 409 only has 10 years.

I plan on getting the 5" system from City Muffler and Performance for $375 and sending it to Jet Hot Coatings to get coated. The coating outperforms 403 stainless uncoated. I have had my headers on various cars/trucks I've owned coated in the past. They never rust and always look good. Even when I lived in Michigan, the road salt capitol of the world. They do turbo housings too. Actually, I think they'll coat just about anything you pay them to.

Been out of town on a little Turkey Day vacation, so I haven't seen your posts, sorry we weren't here for you when you needed us etc.
We offer systems in three materials, aluminized, T-409 and T-304 stainless steel. We offer all three because there is a need for the different materials depending on your expected term of owning the truck and the location where you live etc. Aluminized is a great very cost effective and will do extremely well for the folks in the dry warm southern parts of our country. T-409 is great for those that want to upgrade from the stock material that was supplied by Dodge, it will rust and discolor and in enviroments like the northern 1/3 our the USA can and does perforate in a sometimes short time period, ie Chicago, lots of salt and sand spread all winter long. T-304 is the best but it is difficult to work with as well, the scrap rates are high as it's chromium and nickel content are very high and that makes it hard to bend, especially a mandrel bend. The scrap rates are what make it cost more in relation to T-409 or aluminized, plus the material in its unbent form is approx 25% higher costs as well.
The aluminizeed and all stainless steel system are identical in their design, only the materials they are made from are different. Each system comes with 100% welded hangers to fit all the OEM rubber hanger locations, each system comes with all the parts required to fit a std cab short bed to a quad cab long bed, no extra charge. Each system comes with plated clamps to eliminate corrosion, each system comes with a 5 inch rolled edge polished T-304 stainless steel tip, and all systems come with our Spiral Flow muffler packed with ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool. We also have dual exhaust systems for all the 4x4 trucks that are twin 4 inch tail pipes with twin 5 inch stainless tips etc.
Retail pricing on the systems are as follows:
Aluminized is $469.99
T-409 is $689.99
T-304 is $829.99
Duals are:

I'm hearing good things about Rip Rooks 4" system with muff and resonator. no drone, quiet as stock at idle and cruise, but nice bark when stomped on. Anyone tried that one? see Krabman's posts on the TDR.
ultimately, I'll be interested in a sytem I could install myself along with a BD exhaust brake (better braking at lower RPMs than the pac brake). The Banks + BD brake might be a good combo too. The Banks brake just doesn't trip my trigger at the moment.
