35" Tire Recomendations

I am currently running BFG 315/70/17. I have gotten over 50k miles on them but they need to be changed. I was looking at either the Nitto Terra Grapplers or Toyo Open Country ATs in a 325/70/17. I have seen several posts about both the Nitto and Toyo wearing out quickly. Is anyone running either of these on stock 17" rims? Has anyone had any comments to share, especially in the 325/70/17 size?

Also, is anyone running the Toyo MT in a 35x12.5x17 on the stock rims? Was there a drop in MPGs? How about the ride and tread wear on the street?
Thanks,
D

After my BFG 315/70R/17 wore out 40K. I went to the Nitto TG "E" rated 305/70R/17s they are only about 3/4" shorter than the BFGs, 34.6" I think it was. I read mixed reviews about tire wear but much the same as the BFG reviews. But I do feel these ride smoother and so at least I am happy.

Nitto's site is showing 33.98" tall on those. Nice E rated tire with a high weight load rating. If you're running these on stock wheels,do they rub anywhere? Thanks.

What are you doing with the truck? Offroad lots go aggressive but if you drive on the street 90% of the time don't get m/t's. All you do is lose mpg's and lose life span also street tires usually don't make you wanna smash your head because of tire rumble.

By the same token, why run an A/T tire if you only go offroad occasionally on easy stuff? The Nitto Dura Grappler is a M&S-rated highway tread that comes in a 285/75 17 E-rated for 3950# at 80psi. Highest weight rated tire in the class, bar none. Expecting to tow heavy from time-to-time, I wouldn't run anything else short of 19.5s.

My terra grapplers arnt gonna make 20,000 ,they are 285/70/17's . my buddy has 35 inch toyo mts on his stock wheels and has over 40,000 miles while hauling cattle and equipment. I know he lost like 2 mpg but he does have a smarty and runs it hard. I run mine with a heavy right foot but i still wasnt pleased with the Nitto TG's just my .02

I Had the toyo open country MT and never again!!!!! they were horribly loud and were absolutely useless in snow..

I switch to the Cooper Discoverer STT and I LOVE THIS TIRE its extremely quite and it grips in everything

I honestly don't know whether I have been extremely lucky or if I have some magical gift that allows me to make tires last longer than the general populace, but I am currently running the exact tire you are inquiring about, Nitto Terra Grapplers in 325/70R17D on the OEM wheels. I've got right under 50K miles on them now and they look to last another 10-15K easily. There is a ton of tread left on these things. I've felt the ride start to get a bit more bouncy over the last 10K miles or so, but it is still well within reason. These tires are relatively quiet for an A/T, balance easily, and grip phenominally in all but beach sand (though I have yet to find an A/T that grips in beach sand). I've been over some pretty rough terrain with the truck (im a hotshot so spend alot of time on south texas lease "roads") and alot of highway miles as well. I've even had as much as 20K pounds behind the truck and, while I was worried the load range D tires weren't up to the task, they handled beautifully. I honestly don't have any complaints whatsoever with these tires. If I wasn't dead set on going to 37" tires for my next set, I would be replacing with the exact same brand, model, and size.

As for how I manage to get this kind of longevity out of them? I check my tire pressure at every fuel stop, keep 52psi (cold) in the fronts, 50psi (cold) in the rears, I rotate and rebalance every 5K miles (free from Discount Tire where I purchased and installed them), I don't do any high speed cornering (which can build up heat in the tires and prematurely wear them), no hard accelerating, no hard braking. These are great tires. I really with the 37x12.50R17 Terra Grapplers were an actual 12.5" wide tire instead of the measured 14" wide that Nitto says they are. If they were 12.5" wide, I'd run that as my next set and love every minute of it.

Thanks guys. I will be running these tires mostly on the street. But had concerns about the treadwear. Although my bfg's have lasted awhile the outside edges have almost worn down.
Broncohound- do have any pictures withe the nitto tg on your truck?

I run the Nitto's in the 305-70-17 and doubt I will ever get a different brand of tire. Nearly perfect on my truck.
