305/65r17 E ????

Hello all, I need tires to replace my stock ones on stock 17" rims. I wanted to put the biggest BFG A/T that I could fit. I read that it might be the 315 but I think I have been misreading the numbers. I have owned BFG ATs and I"m pretty much sold on that. The only problem now is picking out which tire. The one above seems like the best I could find on Tirerack.com. It's going to be a bit pricey.

If something like 285/70R17 D would be the same size of even bigger I'd consider it. I really don't put anything in the back to require the load range rating. I basically want the largest, cheapest tire from BFG AT. Any help would really be appreciated. I'm driving on my spare

ps. I have considered even dropping down to 16" rims to save $$ on tires down the road. anyone see the mojave black powder coat by american racing? They rock.

BFG 315/70-17 fit with ever so slight a rub on the control arms at full lock. I'd get the 315s over the 305s.

16" Wheels will not fit over the brake calipers. 305's are your best bet without any kind of lift

Why would you get the 315s over the 305s? I cannot find the 315s on tirerack and I"m thinkin they'd be more expensive but why? better look? cheaper?

Thx for the info on the 16" wheels. saved me a headache.

I just put some 33x12.50x17 on mine today. Close to the 305 you are looking at and they still look small. I will do the 315 next time.

Because the 315s are taller by about 1.5".

I guess the question I should have asked was what is the biggest tire I can fit on my 03 4x4 (with plow prep kit) on standard 17" wheels. I thought the hummer dealers sold ~34's? I'd love to get a hummer wheel tire kit, I heard you have to hone the center out a slight bit.

Frankly I'm trying to satisfy my need to buy 38's without a lift kit i'd love 38s wheel tire lift package but I"m trying to get the biggest tire without lifting it. i guess I should go to a dealer that has them all and put them aside of my truck but they always seem to tell me that they don't have any tires for my truck. (probably because they're looking at the whole dodge rec. standard in their 'puters).

If I got with a 315 what would be the 315 (x) 17 number and if i go with the 305 (x) 17 number? I know 33's 32's 35's but only on my 15" jeep wheel.

Thank you everyone for the help thus far.

315/70/17 = 35x12.50
305/65/17 = 33x12.50
285/70/17 = 33x11.50

The actual measured sizes will vary depending on the brand. 315s will fit but they will rub the control arms of most trucks at full steering lock. 305s will probably fit with no rubbing. I cannot get my 285s to rub under any circumstances on or off road. My truck also has the snow plow package and sits more "level" than alot of trucks I see.

Heres a metric tire calculator,it may help you decide what size you can get the best deal on.A 315 tire is not nessecarily taller than a 305,just wider.

Having searched on this forum I noticed that 315's are one of the causes of the 'death wobble' that doesn't sound fun, any truth to it?

I"m not too concerned about rubbing as long as I don't do any damage. I don't see it being too much of an inconvenience. 35's sound awesome. I've had 33's on a truck before and 32's on my jeep.

Is there a reason why I can't just shop for 35x12.50r17s? or the 33x11.50? DO i have to go with the 315/305 convention?

just because a tire says 35 12.5 or 33 12.5 does not mean that it is that size exactly a good example is the 33 12.5 17 pro comps are only 32.3 tall If you take the time to make sense of the metric sizes it will help in your decision alot of people foreget or do not understand the sizes and assume that 305s are bigger than 285s or 295s when actually 295s are alot taller and 285s are near thesame exact height cause most are only a 65 series instead of 70 series

And just because it says 315/70-17 doesn't mean they are 34.4"x12.4" wide either. Not many tires actually measure to the size marked on the sidewall. The only tires I have come across that measure pretty true are Toyo.

the 305's fit fine no rub no lift or leveling kit needed. the truck gained about an inch and a half at the fender well. had them for two months and no problems plus they fill the wheel wells better.
