'08 H2 Wheels & BFG 315's

Just added a set of '08 H2 wheel/tires and finished the RAM center cap mods. The '08 H2 wheels have a deeper lug nut pocket so more material has to come off the RAM center caps to allow them to fit. I was initially going to cut my chrome center caps but after looking at the wheels, I determined the silver caps were going to look better.

The truck is a little dirty with the recent snow and subsequent junk the state puts down to melt it all.

Now, I need to find a set of fender flares to complement the truck and provide a little more coverage to keep the paint from getting chipped up.

Looks good. I like the new H2 wheels MUCH better than the older style. I am still a fan of the OEM Dodge wheels over the H2's, but these new ones take a very close second to me. Nice looking rig!

I like the looks of alot of different wheels out there as well. But, at $900 for the complete set (5 wheels/tires) with 3 miles on them and $60 for a set of RAM center caps, you can't go wrong as long as you like the looks of the H2 wheels. I prefer the looks of the '08 H2 wheels over the older design by far. The Alcoa forged 8-spoke H2 wheels are nice as well but they are no where near as cheap. I can't even touch a set of 4 new BFG 315's for less than $900 mounted and balanced.

This has got to be one of the better bang-for-the-buck mods out there.

Thanks for the compliment on the truck!

I've thougth about a leveling kit but really prefer the look of a raked vehicle. I will probably put a Carli suspension under it with the heavier front and rear springs. This will raise the front about 2 inches as well as raising the rear about an inch, still keeping the raked look.

Are the H2 rims rated to carry the same weight as my OEM rims on my 3500 Ram?

Good deal for all 5!
Was that on Ebay?

Looks nice, would do the same if I could find some at that price.

If you're keeping it a long time, the flares will wear through the paint where they meet the body.

Based on model specs of a RAM 2500/3500:
1) The H2 GVWR is between 400 and 1100 pounds less than that of a RAM 2500/3500.
2) The H2 towing capacity is between 3000-4000 pounds less but that is probably more related to the engine and transmision not being as strong in the H2 as a RAM's.
3) The BFG tires on the H2 are rated at 3195 pounds and the BFG tires on the RAM 2500/3500 are rated at 3195 pounds.
4) The H2 uses a cast aluminum wheel. The RAM's use everything from stamped steel, cast aluminum and forged aluminum.

I've looked at the H2 and RAM wheels (forged aluminum off my truck and cast aluminum off my neighbors) and none of them have a weight rating. However, they all carry the same DOT "T" rating stamped into the back side of the wheels.

I would say it's a safe assumption that the wheels are rated the same since they carry the same DOT rating. But, what do I know!

I got the wheels/tires from the local Hummer dealer. They wanted $1000 for the set of 5 and I offered $900 without the center cap covers. They had a few more sets with new tires but they were the older style wheels. I looked on Ebay before going to the local dealer and sets of 5 were $1200-1300 with $200-250 for shipping.

Don't the flares have double sided foam tape where they meet the body?
I'd bet some of that clear 3M paint protective film would be perfect about a 1/4 inch on either side of where the flares meet the body.

You could always Line-X the rockers rather than put fender flares on. Just an alternative, in case you really aren't wanting fender flares but want scratches on your rockers less.

Wow, you got a deal. I bought some older H2's for $175 (no tires) and thought I was getting a steal! I am powdercoating mine black ($45/rim) and having them machined ($20/rim) and was quoted $1300 for 5 new BFGs. Like I said, you got a great deal!

BTW - I like the look of the 08's...

06RAM,

I've had my '08 H2s on for a few months now and love them. I'm running Toyo 285/75s on mine. I had the earlier H2 design wheels on for about 110,000 miles and liked them too. I ran through a set of 315s and a set of 285s with those. The Toyos seem to be getting better mileage than either of the other BFGs and the truck definately steers better than with the 315s. I went with the Power Wagon flairs on mine a couple years ago and like them too.

I wish the wheels had a weight rating listed on them. I didn't see the "T" you mentioned, but maybe that rating means they are the same as the Dodge rating. Hope so. I had 3000 lbs in the bed for about 700 miles the other day and sometimes I pull a trailer and tractor that weights probably 9000 lbs. I haven't heard of anyone breaking an H2 wheel yet.

These wheels are really nice looking.

The Carli kit raises the front 3" and the back 1 1/2" thus leveling it. His springs are very forgiving. Nice setup.

OK! Just what kind of mirrors are those? They sure look like the ones off of the new Fords or Chevys?

Loooking Goood!

It's funny, I was looking at H2 rim and tire sets on Ebay to replace my current set and get a spare set of rims to continue on my economy suspension/off-road quest. I saw the new H2 rims and did not care for them......at all. But 06RAM, you have shown me the light! If I can get a set cheap enough, I'm there! I really like the cleaner look.

If you are going for flares, I recommend the ATS pre-painted. I installed them myself and even had the 2 and 5 year old to watch while doing one, and you can tell which one. Just bolt up the flares to dry fit and tape the lines so you know where to put the adhesion promoter, leave a tab on each end of the double sided tape on the flare to pull, remount the flare, place, pull the tabs, press and your good to go. The flares cover the H2's and 315's just about right.

My current plan is to mount mud grip 37's on my spare set of H2 rims for when I finally get to go elk hunting again or for forays into the wilderness if I can get away to find some around here. I will continue to run the 315's the rest of the time so I can get: into the garage, mileage, kids into the truck and most importanty, not listen to the wifey gripe about climbing into the truck. However, she does like driving my truck more than her 535 BMW.
