05' turbo on 03'

i have a question about the turbo off an 05' cummins i have an 03' and can get the turbo off an 05 for cheap. i heard the 05 turbos were bigger? are these turbos interchangable with my 03? also if it's possible to swap, would it help my truck any performance wise or be a waste of time? thanks for the help.

Yes people do this all the time and it would help your truck performance wise. You just have to do something with the waste gate though but I forgot what it is.

I've done the swap and is very good bang for the buck. All the PN and tips on the install on the swap thread. Do the full 4" exhaust too. An exhaust manifold at the same time is ok too.

I did the swap on mine too. I also got the turbo elbow and downpipe from a newer truck and then added a full 4" exhaust. Well worth the time and money and I could actually feel a difference.

Two things you must do though. The studs on the manifold on my 04 were too short to catch the threads on the mounting nuts. I had to back those studs out enough for the nuts to catch good and well. What I did was back them out until the back side was flush (Meaning that the studs stuck through the back side of the turbo mounting flange when it came from the factory. I backed them out until they no longer stuck out on the backside but instead were flush.)
I left the wastegate solenoid in my new turbo and simply clamped off the hose leading to the wastegate. Boost now gets up to the 30-35psi range depending on how much fuel I give it. You don't have to mess with the wastegate but if you don't then you will continue to be stuck at 24-26psi like you are now...
There is a plug you can buy and then drill and add a boost elbow but it seemed like wasted money to me. My mod cost me nothing.....
