What happens during Regen mode?

I know the regen mode is to clean the DPF but my question is how does it do it? My new truck has over 1,000 miles now and I have not seen any message it has gone into a regen but I read on here it probabaly won't tell me unless there is a problem. I am about to add a Edge Insight so I will know. I have not found any info on what happens during a regen. Thanks.

As I understand it, the computer changes the amount and timing of additional fuel injected into the engine. That in turn raises the temperature of the exhaust stream and causes the particles trapped in the DPF to be incinerated.
