Turbo Replacement Report
Personal inspection of the failed turbo on my 2008 3500 revealed that intake blades appeared undamaged at initial inspection. Exhaust side appeared undamaged, so my first thought of something "going through" either side was wrong. Downpipe and exhaust had even coating of dry soot, easily removed by wiping with a rag or finger. No signs of stickiness or goop. Variable vanes could not be observed with teardown.
Used High pressure air to spin the failed turbo. A short burst of grinding sound and immediate stoppage of the rotor was observed. At that point, I looked for play. Forward/back was minimal. Side to side could be easily felt on the exhaust side of the turbo.
I checked my records. This failed turbo had 87,000 miles on it. As posed in other threads, Ebrake always used.
Cost of new OEM turbo-$3835.00
Labor-$488
gaskets/seals/coolant - $100
Mopar now has 24 months/24000 mile warranty according to Service Writer.
