Transmission Light on While Backing

New to the forum. Backing 06 2500CTD4x4, 39K miles, up a short steep grade with heavy load on trailer. Had trans. light come on. Stopped and left engine running. Light went out in about 5 mins. Drove back home 70 miles with empty trailer, no more lights. Opinions on what steps to take next ? Thanks

Never happened to me, but I've heard that backing up can be real hard on the 48re. Reverse increases temp really fast.

No air flow over the normal cooling path in reverse. Word is that heavy load backing is going to heat it up right quick. Folks that have problems backing campers in bad or unimproved campgrounds have seen it also.

I would think you did as your were suppose to.Stop and let it cool.In yester year there was no warning in such conditions. Were you using low 4x4 with this large load?

When backing with a large load always use 4WD LO. You did the right thing by letting her cool.

Definitely use 4 Lo when backing with a load. Good to let it cool in neutral as the fluid continues to circulate. It doesn't in Park.

Not sure what temp the light comes on, but you might want to change the fluid. I've never had mine over 190* in five years.

You could add a gauge package including trans temp with a probe on the hot side and maybe duplicate what you did to see what temp the light comes on.
