Transmission fluid

This is a general question for some of the young drivers , I am 73 yrs old and have been driving auto tranny's for a good 50 years and until about 8 yrs ago never heard of scheduled transmission oil changes and have never had a problem with any transmission ( ford ,chevy, dodge etc. ) does anyone know why it is so important now ??? in other words , what has changed??.

The auto transmission always required a fluid change. My very first auto was in 1979 a Jeep Cherokee Chief, 360 V-8 with full time 4WD auto. This required a fluid change at 30,000 or 35,000 miles if I remember correctly.

The auto transmission needs this to prevent wear particles from blocking tiny oil passage in the control valve that control the shifting in the auto. Now did people do it? NO that is why there is AMCCO transmission repair facility.

I changed my fluid and both filters at 16,000 miles. I also installed a Mag-Hytec pan with added fluid capacity to help keep the oil cooler and to stay cleaner longer. The reason is that with more oil the tiny wear particles are suspended longer in the oil. This will then tend to be filtered out as the oil is pass through the filters and then to the cooler before it is return to the trans.

I will change again at 45,000 Miles with new Amsoil and two new filters.

I agree...

Always should have been done. But rarely was. The old transmissions were much more forgiving and were a vastly simpler design.

kind of like comparing a 12 valve to a new furd 6.7
