Tests of Just CJ-4 Oils?

Has anyone found independent test results that focus just on the new CJ-4 engine oil? I've scanned the 'net for tests but many still are commenting on CI-4 or CI-4+. I would hope that Southwest Research Institute would have done some of the testing but haven't found much so far that is free of marketing hype. Maybe it's too early yet, but my 6.7 will never use CI-4 and am curious how the new stuff stacks up - preferably the dino lineup such as Delo 400, Delvac 1300, Shell Rotella, Mystic, Castrol, Caterpillar DEO-ULS, etc, etc.

Oil

As long as usage is in accordance with owners manual API specification the oil will work no matter what brand. The Valvoline is good stuff and Cummins is using it in their production probably due to the fact the Valvoline quoted them the cheapest price. Just thoughts not dinging Vavloline, as I have used it most of my vehicle ownership life.

What about a full synthetic CJ-4 for cold weather operation?

I couldn't find one on the Valvoline site, but might not have been looking in the right spot.

What are the people up north using in the 6.7L's?

I'm using Rotella 15W40 and I use it year round...UP HERE where its -35C with the windchill today. I might go to the Rotella synthetic but I want to put more miles on the truck before I do that.

Last I looked for Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 it was still not CJ-4 rated. WalMart here in northern IL had the CI-4 rated version on the shelves, and the Shell Website still reflects that in their data sheets.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Stickin' with the 15W40 for now.

I just did an oil analysis on CJ 4 with Valvoline Premium Blue and it was well within the statistical norms. I currently have 56,000 miles on the engine.

Here is the information on the OA I put in an earlier post:

There was a lot of speculation on the new CJ rated oils when people could not find the CI4+ oils any more.

Like everyone else I was also concerned about what the changes would show.

I just received my OA with 4900 miles on the oil, it is Valvoline Premium Blue and is the CJ rated oil. I do have about 1400 miles towing at a GCVWR of a little over 19,000 lbs on this sample.

Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40 (CJ4)

Aluminum -------------------------2
Chromium -------------------------1
Iron ------------------------------24
Copper ---------------------------4
Lead -----------------------------2
Tin -------------------------------0
Moly ---------------------------44
Nickel ----------------------------0
Manganese ---------------------Not Tested
Silver ----------------------------2
Titanium -------------------------0
Potassium ------------------------0
Boron ----------------------------17
Silicon ---------------------------4
Sodium --------------------------7
Calcium ---------------------1399
Magnesium ----------------------800
Phosphorus -------------------1144
Zinc -------------------------1334
Barium ---------------------------0

Visc -------At 100 deg C - 13.24

From my previous OA Magnesium was up, Calcium was down, Phosphorus, Zinc, Boron, and Moly were down. This appears to be the make up of the different additive packages.

My uneducated guess or SWAG is that the new CJ formulations (at least from Valvoline) are doing fine as there were no changes worth noting in the wear metals of the sample. Iron was up 2ppm and Aluminum was down 2ppm. Granted this is only on 2 samples, one on CI4+ and the other on CJ4 but it looks good IMHO.

I believe this new oil is not a lubrication change but a change in the way it burns if it happens to get past a ring.
The reason for this new oil as I understand it, is it is to help the particulate filter on the exhaust go longer without giving you grief.
