Silencer ring on 6.7
silincer ring
actually they are not pressed in. They are held in by three dowles. The best way not to hurt any thing is to take the turbo off drill out the dowles and it will come right off. But who in the hell is going to take the time to do it. With the dowles it seems like the are pressed in but it is in place real good. I dont know if you can take them off with out destroying them. I have not seen one yet. But that doesnt mean it cant be done. On my truck with afe stage 2 and silincer ring missing and straight piped I have never heard it whistle so loud and noticeable on any other truck. What sound are you guys getting out of yours.
ring tones
i had my 4x4 shop take it out for me the other day and it was a waste. the turbo is not any louder at all! but when the EB is on it will make some strange gurguling sounds maby kind of a burping noise. not very loud but i do hear it. i think it will be better to replace the airbox to turbo tube than take out the silencer. my 2 cents
O.K. guys, I got my silencer ring out with very little damage. The way I did it was I removed the aluminum intake housing from the turbo by loosening the band clamp and gently pulling away from turbo. This exposes the turbine so be carefull. Then simply drill the 3 dowel pins out,but don't drill all the way through. Only drill about 1/4 inch deep. and tap it out by putting a long screw driver from otherside in behind the the grove as not to damage the smooth inside surface. Just take your time and lightly tap. it will slowly come out. The most you might have to do to reinstall silencer ring is drill 3 new dowel pin holes. There is a line up pin on the bottom of the turbo. Make sure the pin goes in the hole in the aluminum housing when reinstalling.
It sounds pretty good. I just took it on a short drive. Its a little differant than the 5.9. It doesnt really whistle until you really get on it. It kinda sounds like wind blowing through a screen at lower rpm's. I think the fact that its a VGT turbo, Under a steady speed with no load you can bearly hear it.
I also took all the crap out of the intake tube. You simply push it out. Small end to the big end.

I really don't know what the benefit is in removing the ring and in turn disturbing the air flow to the turbo. If you look at what happens when that ring is removed it dumps about 1/2" all around the intake to the turbo to a flat surface and slows down and changes the inbound flow. That has got to reduce and slow down air flow.
That ring actually is a small version of the old velocity stack that directs and swirls the flow of air right as it enters the turbine.Without this you have cut the head off a tornado.Cut the head off and the body dies.Hence you lose and slow down air flow and when you lose air flow you lose HP and TRQ.
Someone said it makes it sound like a supercharger, actually from my trips to the various types of racing venues and my own different types of turbo or SC engines I hear more of a whine from a SC and a whistle from a TC.
This is just MOPP and not meant to start an electronic air bombardment.

Well.. I'm puttin mine back in this weekend. I think it's hurting the performance and fuel milage. The new turbo design has incorperated the silencer with the intake to the turbine. I did take it to my local machine shop and had them increase the intake opening 1/8 of an inch. Thats about the most you can take due to thickness. I'm gonna drill the dowel pins holes out and tap the holes for a 3/16" set screw.
David,
I would be very careful using set screws or anything else after removing this... If was me and going to put the ring back I would make sure to clean the pin holes and whether they are tapped or otherwise with a very good solvent. Then get you some red loctite on whatever you use to hold the ring in with.
Sure would be a bad thing to have one swallowed, YIKES...
Now I must agree, I too love to hear these things talk back as your in and out of the throttle. I would just figure on having the ring out and that much turbulence, its got to act like a dusting on the leading tips of the turbo impeller with that kind of noise and that much of a void before the impeller...
I am sure it would not be like a dirty or poor quality air filter dusting the impeller, but air can cut also and I would be interesting to know how long it would take before you could see the evidence on the impeller blades.
Would be interesting to also see if you couldn't just machine out a different ring and more along the lines of a true velocity sack as mentioned above.
Bringing the ring more funneled outward and into the intake tube that fits over the inlet of the turbo. This might could be made to get the air to the impeller and also enhance the sound for those that like to hear them??? Be worth a try and would certainly be a cool project. Just a thought...
I wouldn't be surprized at all that you very well might find a velocity stack design that would actually get more air to the impeller by rifling it in and see a performance gain as well as get to hear the sound of it all... Then if was really slick with this project, might be a new attachment to market for our trucks as well$$$

Oh.. I plan on using loctite. I'm gonna let the bit go into the silencer just a little so the set screw goes into it a little too.
I thought about trying to design a whole new one. And I might still. I'm pretty good friends with the machine shop owner so I might look into it soon.$$$$????

excuse me, gentlemen, but i'm new, ignorant and curious - definitely a trifecta that sends spasms of nausea through the intestines of you experienced old cummins hands...but, i've like to hear more about these silencer rings, and the effects, positive and negative, of removing one. i just got on this site yesterday, and have never been in a chat house of any kind before. couple months ago was in missoula at a shooting match with a trailer behind a tundra, and realized a needed torque. so i swapped for an 02 2500 with 39k miles and tow pkg, camper pkg, auto trans, 2wd, qc, AND, i guess, the silencer ring still at home. since then i've installed s&b cai, 4" turbo back mbrp, and hypertech max energy, which i think i'll swap for a smarty. pls tell me more about silencer rings and how to get mine out. thankee.
you have an 02? techinically you are in the wrong forum but thats ok. I believe your silerencer ring (if there is one on an 02) is just held in with a snap ring.
This forum is mainly just for the new 6.7L cummins which has a different turbo then your truck. Im sure there will be some one along that can give you a definite answer.
