Bypass Valve, EGR
Part Numbers:
68038942A$
68026992A$
Issue Description:
Prior to replacing the EGR Bypass Valve on a 2010 6.7L Cummins diesel engine for a P245B fault code, please verify the fault is repeatable. An issue has been identified in extreme cold weather conditions that can cause the valve to momentarily freeze/bind and trigger this fault. To determine if the valve should be replaced, please perform the following: Bring the vehicle up to normal operating temperature and leave running. Next, to completely clear the P245B fault, power down the vehicle for 1 min, turn key back on, wait one 1 min and clear P245B fault code. Finally, using a scan tool test drive the vehicle to verify that P245B does not reappear as a pending fault. If the fault does not return, the issue is being caused by the cold weather stick/bind issue described above. If the condition repeats after the engine has been warmed sufficiently, then the bypass valve will need to be replaced. A fix for this momentary binding issue will be in the next calibration software release, tentatively expected in late March 2010.
2009 Ram 2500/3500 with a 6.7L Cummins Turbo diesel: Before replacing the EGR Bypass Valve for a P245A fault code, please verify that the ECM calibration has been updated to the latest level. There has been an issue identified with prior calibrations that may cause this fault to set erroneously if the vehicle has had a low battery voltage condition or been operated in extremely cold temperatures. Replace the Bypass Valve only if the fault continues to occur after updating the ECM and the appropriate diagnostics have been performed.
The "valve spring" on the EGR bypass valve is used only during plant assembly and does not affect actual valve operation. Please do not replace an EGR bypass valve if you find this installation spring to be broken - simply remove the remaining pieces of the spring to avoid customer confusion.

download stating the that the flash was not successful. If there is an error
message after the flash has completed, first confirm that the DTC U1601 is
not present and that the P/N has been updated. If so, start the engine to
confirm the flash was successful. If DTC U1601 is present, OR the P/N did not
update, OR the engine did not start, the flash may have been unsuccessful.
Restart the flash update.
1. Reprogram the ECM with the latest software. Follow the detailed service procedures
available in DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT, Refer To Group 8 - Electrical > 8E -
Electronic Control Modules > MODULE, Engine Control, Diesel > Standard Procedure
> PCM/ECM Programming - DIESEL. After PCM reprogramming, the following
must be performed:
a. Power down the PCM (key off) after flash. Automatic Transmission equipped trucks
must have key off for 10 minutes. Manual Transmission trucks must have key off for
75 seconds.
