Rear main seal
Rear main seal
I am changing my clutch and I noticed that the rear crankshaft seal has a tiny amount of oil on it. It is clearly used diesel oil. I already installed the clutch, but didn't put the transmission back on yet, but now I am slightly concerned about this. The truck is an 07 with only 20k miles. If this is a sign of it going bad, I can change it easier now than later. I don't want to be without my truck waiting for the part, but its worth not having to take it apart again. Or maybe, since its under warranty for a while, I should just leave it alone and take it to Dodge if it goes. I hate having other people work on my truck though.
Any ideas?

You know I saw the same thing when I did my clutch. I went ahead and put a new seal in while I was at it. However I don’t think that the seal you see when you have the flywheel off is really the only oil seal. I think it might be more of a dust seal.
I might be wrong; hopefully someone else will chime in. I hadn’t even thought about it until I saw your post.
I think I got the seal at my local Autozone. Either way I think you’ll be ok. If seals don’t let a little bit of oil through for lubrication they’ll dry and burn up.
Here is the PN from AutoZone, NAPA and what not might have it too. The one I got had the seal and a gasket for the engine to trans adapter plate.
