After months of nail bitting and listening to the never ending Ford vs Chey vs Dodge debate, I have purchased a new Dodge 2500. What brand of oil do you guys use?

 

I use Amsoil in every thing. Congrats on the new truck.

 

New as in 2008/2009?

If your truck is NEW then you must have the 6.7L CTD.
As far as brand of oil, its gonna come down to personal preference.
Just make sure your oil is approved CJ-4 rated oil.

My dad runs Amsoil 5w-40 CJ-4 in his 07 6.7L

Valvoline premium blue. I figure if cummins says it is good enough for my engine that is good enough for me. It actually has the cummins logo right on the jug. They aso have a synthetic version valvoline premium blue extreme I believe

 

Shell Rotella!

 

I have put thousands and thousands of miles running Rotella T but after you get it broken in, around 10k, then I would switch to synthetics. I now run Amsoil but there are others out there that are probably as good. You know there is something different when you spill or just wipe off the dipstick with your fingers and the synthetic wipes off your fingers with just a rag. With the old dino oil, you have to scrub the black junk away with gojo, then wear it off for two days. I like the synthetics but break in the engine first!

 

rotella t for ever, never a problem. On new truck going to switch to syn at 15K miles if I can get a deal or just keep on running Rotella.. I also use Donaldson ELF filters.

 

You will do your truck some good to include looking into Schaeffers!!!!
There is nothing like it. Cheaper than amsoil.

 

I've have had very good results with Shell Rotella T.

 

Zero complaints with Royal Purple.

 

I would hope that an oil that is 70-80% dino is cheaper than any of the real synthetics out there. read their MSDS on their site - mostly group III oil.

 

Quick question for you guys, and not trying to hijack the thread, but figured it was kinda relavent. Where im working right now im putting 2000+ miles a week on my truck in VERY VERY EXTREMLY dusty conditions (pipeline right of way) and $120+ oil changes with my preferred (Royal Purple) oil is getting pretty expensive. My question is, once running synthetic would it be detrimental to go back to a traditional oil like Rotella T or Premium blue. Thanks in advance.

 

Motorcraft 15-40

 

Premium Blue Valvoline 15-40 is the cummins factory fill and what I use.

I use the classic since my truck is a classic 5.9, change it around every 10K.

 

Nope, not at all.
Maybe a by-pass filter system would be a better choice? Keep the oil clean and run extended change intervals - if you do oil analysis.
