Fleetguard.... Dodge has an "Approved" filter list. If your filter is not approved and you have a warranty issue, they will deny warranty. I have reas plenty of stories about guys running cheap filters and the truck sucks the filter element through the engine... 6,000+ repair bill and no warranty. I don't believe that filter is approved. Get some FLeetfuard filters from Genos or Cummins. FLeetguards are actually a cummins product..

Is that "list" current? I believe that came out a few years back and has not been revised anytime recently.

I just bought my 1st oil filter for my new truck. Bought it from the dealer. Less than $10.00. Woohoo, I'm sooo excited. How much are you guys paying for your filters. Dealer also told me the new 6.7's require a special oil (that they also sell) and that I should only use it. It is also the Mopar brand, less than $4.00 per qt. Same price by the gallon, less than $16.00 per gallon. I think I remember reading that it took 12 qts. Sound right?
Is the dealer just selling me expensive oil?

Facts please

If there is an actual report of a Purolator filter failure on a Cummins engine please post it. The only failure in recent time is the Fram oil filter. That particular failure prompted the "approved list" of filters of which Purolator is on and approved. Fram also updated their filter after the failure(S). Post data and we all benefit. The filter manufactuer is liable if their product causes an engine failure. I have run the Purolator filters for over fifteen years on gas and diesel engines with no issues. To each his own on choice, but it is not mandatory to use a Mopar or Fleetguard filter. MHO.

Summary of "approved" filters:

Anything but Fram.

Personally, I think the Donaldson Endurance filters are the BOMB!!

Just make sure it is the CJ-4 low ash oil. Required oil for the 6.7l as stated in the manual. But I think it costs a bit more than the CI oils.

I talked to a rep at Amsoil and he also told me that the 6.7 requires special low sulfur oil and special filter. Sounds like the Mopar stuff is really cheap in comparison!!! He stated that the Amsoil correct parts were Oil Filter EA080 at $22 or Donaldson Endurance filter ELF7349. Oil recommended was Amsoil DEO at $27.55/gal.

Yes, we need 3 gallons. 11 quarts in the motor and 1 in the filter, so I have been told and I recall in the manual.

Oil change interval is, I think from 7K to 10K depending on loads and type of driving. NUTS!!! I guess I am used to the "my grampa always said, every 3,000 miles"

The retail price of Amsoil 5w40 diesel oil is $27.95, but you can get it for the perfered members price of $21.90 a gallon and that figures out to be $5.48 a qt before tax. BTW at $5.48 a qt that is less then what my local Walmart wants for a qt of Mobil One 15K synthetic oil. FYI, you can use the Fleetguard Stratpore filter if you change your oil at 7-10,000 miles. Also get use to changing your oil at 7-10,000 miles as changing it at 3K is for gas engines with 4-6 qt's of oil.

Cool

OK, look, to each his own - I believe in liberty and all that.... At the end of the day it is YOUR truck, so I am not telling you what to do here...

BUT...

Cummins put THEIR LOGO on Valvoline Premium Blue, not AMSOil. Cummins makes / sells Fleetguard filters, and recommends those. Your 100K warranty on your CUMMINS engine is backed up by, uh, CUMMINS.

Why the would anyone not follow CUMMINS recommendations and pay DOUBLE for the privilege? Just so your service interval can be longer?? Last I checked, more frequent service intervals was a GOOD thing!

The owners manual is just about BEGGING you guys to let go of your "additives" and "better ideas" and just let the engineers do what they went to school for - make stuff work right.

$20 AMSOil filters??? BAAAAAAAHHHHHH HA HA HA HA HA!
