Newbie - Impressions/Questions about the 6.7
Hi all, I am a newb to the site. I have really got the itch to get a Cummins after seeing/riding/driving my cousins '96 and my buddy's 01. I would really like to get a brand new regular cab 4x4 but really have some concerns about the 6.7 from what I have read on this site. I want a truck that is loud, rattles, and can blow some smoke and can be modified. The 6.7 has been out for 9 months now, so when do you think the aftermarket mods will be more widely available? Do you think someone will come out with a way to eliminate the dpf without rednecking it? I really don't want that crap on my truck. Do you think I would be better off looking for a slightly used 07 5.9?
I'm not a tree hugger by any means and I leave a carbon footprint large enough for three families, but when I see one of those diesels spewing a black cloud so thick their truck disappears, something is wrong there.

I guess our kids and grandkids can figure out how to deal with what we leave them when the time comes.
I got the 6.7 because it's the wave of the future and it begins with us. It rattles a little. It's powerful. And it's clean.
I'm a newbie too, but I at some point you gotta ask yourself just how long do you think guys can continue to chug out clouds of black smoke while maintaining a healthy environment?

Anyone who is saying they don't want or would not recommend buying a 6.7L because of reliability concerns is saying so simply because they are mis-informed. Clearly, there were early problems with the DPF's and turbo's though the majority of those issues were also software problems and were fixed with updated firmware flashes.
I'm seeing few people reporting those same issues on the 08's and no brand new problems yet. The 6.7's 6 speed auto is also head and shoulders better than the 48RE.
The 5.9's were definitely noisier, you can remove the silencer ring and get some turbo whistle, and there are 1,000 different after market mod's out there today that can give you smoke and HP increases up and over 600 HP. If you want to bomb your truck today and don't mind buying yesterdays technology, then go with a 5.9.
Do it because you don't want to wait 6 months to a year for the 6.7 mods' to come out, not because you think there is a reliability problem.

Now that was good-BigD
If you want a truck that REALLY sounds like a diesel, you need to get back to the 12 valve Cummins. I have an '89 CTD in a Suburban and you can hear it coming from a ways off and that is with everything I can do to quiet it down. The pre common rail injection engines have much more of the traditional diesel rattle than the new ones. As far as the smoke goes, it just shows that the engine isn't burning fuel efficiently, and I find it hard to understand why that is very desirable, unless you just want to p__s people off.
No, it just got running boards, chrome grille inserts, a sprayed in bed liner and it's getting a leveling kit too.
I agree with your statement in theory, but dust supposedly does the same thing, right? So remind me why we need to run a filter on the intake side of our engine??? Living in the Phoenix area where there is little rain to rinse things away demonstrates the effects particulates have on air quality and visibility.
I'm not trying to be an argumentative a$$, but if modifying my engine meant it would belch out clouds of black soot when I accelerate, I'd just choose not to do it, that's all.

The whole time I was there I couldn't believe how every environmentalist seemed like hypocrite because of the fact that they chose to live in one of the most inhospitable climates this country has to offer. If you think about it, everything has to be brought in from somewhere else... even the water in some cases. That's why I moved to the woods, where it rains 270 days a year

A little puff here and there isn't so bad around these parts. Ok, I'll shut up now
