The down shift in tow/haul is tied to the brake pedal. If you are in tow/haul, you have the eb on, and you put on the brakes, the trans will start to downshift. Sometimes agressively.

I prefer to use the ERS when I'm slowing down (especially with a trailer). That way you can wait a little longer before downshifting to 3rd to get a smoother downshift with less "jerking".

Gotta say too that the integrated VGT exhaust brake works wayyy better than my vacuum butterfly valve on my 2005.

Same here, that integrated EB is way better IMHO. I made my first towing break-in miles yesterday and discovered the ERS makes the slowing down much nicer like you did.
