My Father inlaw wants a 6.7 but.........

with all the regen issue's and turbo problems he is scared and I cant say I blame him
but he called me this morn and said he's going to drive some d-maxes...I would take a d-max but I would 100% rather have a Cummins.
think he is safe buying a new 6.7??? I know this is a cummins site so yall are going to say go cummins or go home...but hey maybe someone will convince me he will be ok?????
his last truck 7.3psd ate trannys cause he tows heavy.....he really wanted a 6.7 g56 dually cause he is so sick of autos..
is the 6.7 worth the gamble of getting a good truck vs a lemon????
He just does not want to get stranded anymore
the more I think about the more I think it may be worth the risk???? after all it would all be warranty..but who cares if it is in the shop all the time

thanks for any opinions or info you have on the subject.

Well, if he tows alot, I would try and convince him of the 6.7, but I don't think he would be making a BAD decision getting the dmax. Lets face it, with all this new emissions crap going on, none of the big 3 are perfect. I would definitely not recommend the powerjoke, but I think he would be OK with the Dodge or the Dmax!!

I would say the 6.7 I have not had any problems at all with mine I think the flash updates have pretty much fixed all the problem. The dmax are a pretty good truck but for towing I think he would want the dodge. My 6.7 stock pulled better then a couple of the dmaxs here that were chipped. But the dmax are faster for racing for intake, chip, exhaust, on both trucks.

The 6.7 with the 6spd auto and the exhaust brake is hard to beat for towing. Mine was built in early April and other than the infamous P245 code it has been flawless , and since the last visit to dealer to have updates , etc. it has not thrown a code. That was early August and over 3500 miles ago.

Hi 53,

I have a 6.7 and the auto, with about 9,900 miles with over 4,500 of those towing. Outside of about 12 CELs between 5,500 and 8,800 miles the truck has been perfect. Ironically it stopped throwing CELs about 400 miles prior to getting the latest flash for the EGR valve and now no CELs for over 1000 miles. I would like to add that the auto, tow mode and exhaust brake are great.

I have no problem telling anyone I like my Dodge (6.7 & auto) and would buy it again instead of a Ford or GMC.

You didn't ask but FWIW - I would not try to convince anyone to buy one or the other. I may show them the information, but let them make their own decision. The best one usually can do in a situation like this, is break even. If he gets the Dodge and likes it, it was his idea. If he gets the Dodge and hates it, it was your idea.

Good Luck,

George

if he wants a manual, he's only got one choice if Ford is out of the race... Chevy doesn't offer a manual behind the DMax...

I can honestly say that I've had several problems with my 6.7, but none of them have left me stranded anywhere. I've had 6-7 CELs and I only have 5800 miles on mine. I brought it back to the shop every time it lit. Most recent problem was it started dripping reddish fluid from the front left area of the truck. Brought it back to the dealer and they found that it was a leak at the cap of the hydro boost. They replaced the power booster unit for free. I would say that if you can deal with growing pains, and none of those pains leave you stranded or put your life in danger, then the dodge is worth it.

Thanks for the info gents.....I know the only manuals come from dodge and ford and ford is not an option...

I just got back from test driving a 08 d-max with him...I gotta say it was super smooth ride but did not feel has strong as the cummins now that he is looking at autos he went to test drive a new 6.7 auto 6 speed.
I did not and will not talk him into ANY truck, he decided he wanted CTD on his own. before it was a no auto thing now it is a different story

Tell him about the C&C trucks with a G56 or the Ascin(spelling?). If he dosen't have to have a box then he may be interested. They are more trouble free.

I would be inclinded to think that there has been enough info now that dealers can fix problems and maybe there aren't even so many problems.

It all seems to be emissions related, and all the big three have had teething pains.

I LOVE my 5.9 '03 and someday when it's tired a 6.7 seems like the only choice!

I have 13k miles on mine 99 percent towing 20k plus pounds w/ 3.73's. I wish i opted for 4.10's but the manual on the auto, LOL, is nice. I just drop her in fifth gear going through the hills and its just like 4.10's. LOL, almost, but either way, I have flash AE and I have gotten no CELS. I have been putting alot of LSD in though and im starting to notice its being a little bit of a dog. Im about to change my fuel filter and bout to order my aux tank but its so hard finding ulsd these days on the interstate.

Funny story, went to a pilot station yesterday. On the pump it had 3 stickers.
LSD
ULSD

All next to each other. haha, isnt that a federal crime?? Either way, I know im doing so bad putting lsd in my dodge and im noticing the difference with power and mpg. Im doing my fuel filter tomorrow and gonna do my best of putting only ulsd and maybe hopefully once my aux tank comes in in 3 more weeks, since backordered. It might burn all that old crap out of the dpf/injectors possible. But either way, no codes, not even a dpf message of anything!!!! So, im doing all right. BTW, i get avg 300 miles a tank hauling 20k.. CUMMINS ALL THE WAY BABY

I'd definatly tell him to consider the cab & chassis, I have over 21k on mine with absolutely no problems, & there are about a 1/2 dozen of them around my house that are all doing great, one had to have a rail pressure relief valve changed & that's the only trouble I know of from any of them, the cab & chassis trucks I think have less emissions junk to deal with, & there haven't been any TSB's that I know of for them yet, so they must be doing pretty good! I love mine & wouldn't trade it for a D-max, but that's just my opinion???? good luck! Dusty

Thanks for the advice gents...I called him today and he said he picked up a 07 6.7CTD Auto QC dually he told me the Chevy had a little more get up then the CTD but between the extra price they wanted for the Chevy and that he just plain likes the look of the Dodge better that's the route he went. I am sure he will be happy with the truck it is a Cummins after all
Thanks
