Looking at a 3rd Gen NEED HELP!
Its a toss up if I want to get a 5.9 or 6.7. I have heard that there is a possibility the newer 5.9's may end up getting retrofitted with emissions equipment. Dont jump me over that one, just something I read. Anyhow, Im driving a 96 now so either truck would be a step up. Im just wondering if it would be better to go ahead and get the 6.7 or try to find a 5.9 and be happy with it. Thanks!
If you want to stay with an auto tranny, get the 6.7L. The stock 68RE is WAY better than the stock 48RE, 142K miles on mine so far. Plus you get the exhaust brake too. Some sacrifice with fuel mileage but a much better truck in my opinion, especially if you're towing.
Ditto GM SCOTT ! I have 40000 trouble free KM on mine and it is an early build 07.5 6.7 6spd auto. (feb 07 build date). Only wish was that I had gotten this truck 3 months later through the US as it cost 15K more than I can buy a New 08 for now!!!! 16.5 avg MPG though , slowly creeping up...
I have a good friend that is a diesel teck at a Dodge dealership, he said when the first 6.7 came out most of them had some bugs they had to work out but for the most part nothing major. But he said the 08 have been really good with very little issues.
I not loosing any sleep over the fear of having to add a DPF to my 5.9
Has anyone distroyed a 68RE yet??

Nothing in years past have ever had to be retrofitted,Thats not the way the Feds work.Has to meet the standards set down for that model year.If they were going to do that it would be from 03 up,But it won't.Manual trannys are a dinosaur. If its a 6.7 get the auto.
Technology wise they are.Only so much you can do with a manual and clutches.New type autos offerered by many car manufactures are really trick.Like comparing BMW or Honda motorcycles to Harley's and knowing anything about engineering and design.
Hey TX,
Thanks for starting the thread. I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to decide between an '08 manual and '06 manual. After reading some of the posts about the '08s with a 68RFE, I'm half starting to consider that though.
I think I want a manual because I've been driving an auto almost 9 years. I hate going up a hill with a load and all of sudden (WEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!) the rpms double. My buddy has an '02 manual and he beats me by 1 - 2 mpg wherever we go. Considering an '06 because the 5.9 is plenty for what I do and doesn't have all the emissions crap to kill mpg. I haven't seen anything bad about the 68RFE though and with 6 speeds, I'm guessing it would be more like a (weeee!).
What's scaring me is I'm seeing a lot of guys quoting around 11 mpg city and 15 mpg highway with the 6.7. Go to the 2nd gen forum and it's more like 16/17 and 20/21 - I see this with my 2nd gen. If I get 11/15 mpg empty on a 3rd gen and I'll regret I bought it every day. One post said 1 -2 less mpg for the 6.7 vs. 5.9. If that's right, I can live with that . . . especially if I make it back up by going to a manual.
