How to I.D. a CA truck?

Can you tell by looking at the VIN or the window sticker?

Trying to hunt down a CA truck with 4.10's, dealers around here are way too proud of them.

or how about the Valve cover?

You might try going onto craigs list and put yourself in california....then ask some of the people that have them for sale if it says on their valve cover that it meets California emissions. I know on motorcycles there is a sticker that is pasted onto the frame. I know this doesn't help much but might help a little. Maybe a dodge dealer in California might know or cummins....But if you called the MVD where they do the level 3 inspection they would for sure know.

Since I don't have the truck in front of me, I need to know if there is a digit or something in the VIN that will tell me if it's a CA truck....

Ca Vehicles

I just looked at mine. On the right side of the valve cover(looking at engine)you'll see a sticker listing a number of specifications. On the very bottom,it'll read "conforms to Ca emission standards". If you could possibly score a low mileage used one with your requirements and it has 7500 miles or more on it,you're home free. It'll register legally here.Take your time. The right vehicle is out there for you. In this economy, guys will be bailing out of some of these vehicles due to monetary constraints.

Thanks Dave,

Looks like I might have settled on one, Woodhouse found the truck I want with everything except the 4.10's for ~41K. A little more than DSM, but he can get me delivery in AZ instead of ID, which cuts about 950 miles off the return trip.

What really sucks is he found a truck in Ontario, but I think Ontario Dodge thinks I'm buying it from them.

hey conrad....

Not sure if you really want the 410 gears... Tye has them in his truck and he was really turning some RPM's following Nikki and I down the freeway at 75...

I have the 373 and with the 35 I am at 70 and 1800 RPM... truck is real happy there.....

If Tye was running 37" tires and pulling 11K, I bet he'd want the 4.10's.....

Not too worried about it with the 6sp auto. I talked to bob4X4 since he's running substantially the same set up I will be and pulling roughly the same....he says the common rails don't like pulling heavy with large tires and heavy trailers.

I'm inclined to agree with him, but I'll know better when I get the trailer behind the truck. First pull will be with the 3.73's and OEM tires, we'll see how she does.

Nope I tend to disagree... I had 3.73's on my 05 pulled my 30 foot trailer at 12k and loved it rpm's at 75 were 1900.... which was awesome for my truck because that happened to be the sweet spot.. I loved it...

With 37" tires? I hate having to drop gears going uphill, and with CA traffic on a busy weekend, I hated watching the EGT's got through the roof trying to get the rig moving again.

I have 4.10's on my 2nd gen, running 37's. I can't pull in OD unless I want to run at 1150-1250* over flat ground. 3.73's would be worse......RPM's would be lower, but the EGT's would be higher from working the motor harder.

I guess we'll see, it'll be a little while until I get gauges and whatnot. 1900RPM @ 75MPH means nothing to me if I'm at 1600* keeping it there..

Back to my original question, I've since found out that you can't tell from the VIN or sticker, it's actually an order code on the factory invoice- NAA for 49 state vs. NAE for CA emissions. Or so I was told......

Are there any hills in Idaho? Drove through there once, don't remember any....

Based on MY experience, and bob4X4's word.....I think I'm gonna do the 4.10's.....

I have 3.73 with the G56 so it's like having 4.10s.

Conrad,

Contact Integrity dodge in Las Vegas, all of there trucks are Ca. emissions. That's were I got mine. They are the #2 largest dodge dealer. Call and ask for Larry K. That's who I bought my truck from. They paid for everything except my flight over to pick her up, hotel, fuel, taxi, etc...

Tye

FYI - You can't call today cause it's against the law in Vegas to sell cars on Sunday. Imagine that! You can do ANYTHING in Vegas but that.

Thanks Tye....not sure if I need another dealer in the mix, I've already got two offering me substantially the same truck for 11-12K under MSRP. Big difference is where I take delivery.

What the heck, I got nothing to lose.....I'll holler at him tomorrow.

I live in CA and bought my 2006 CTD in Montana. I contacted Dodge before I did it and they confirmed that the Cummins is 50 state legal. I had no problem registering it in CA. I believe that all the 600 series engines and later are 50 state legal. You have to go back to 2003 to find engines that were rated different for CA, when the SO engine for CA was 235 hp and everyone else had 250 hp for the SO engine.
