High Idle Feature

I keep seeing this mentioned here but how does it work. Service Rep once told me to use Cruise Control when stopped?? Did not do a thing for the idle RPMs. Please, Oh please enlighten me. Thanks

If your truck has it, at an idle in park, or in neutral with the brake set, turn the cruise on, and hit set. This will increase your RPM's to 1100. Then, if you want, hit the accel to idle up, coast to idle down between 1100 and 1500 rpm's.

What year is your truck? If it is still under warranty, you can have it flashed if you complain about the truck taking a long time to warm up. I do not know for sure if they still do it under warranty, so ask first...

they won't do it under warranty, because the feature is not designed for warm up. it's used mainly for the pto. the added benefits are keeping the motor temp up to prevent wetstscking, sooting etc., also it keeps the a/c colder while running idle, and helps the motor warm up faster in cooler climates which in turn gives you faster heat in the cab. if your truck is an auto, then you just need to have the dealer turn the feature on with the star scan. none come from the factory turned on.

I believe there is a TSB for out for lengthy warm up times for '04.5 and up trucks. If you get the work done under the TSB, and it's still within the warranty period, they have to do it under warranty.

Yeah, cause I had mine done like that. The reason that I say still under warranty is because sometimes, they give me a hard time about doing TSB's... they are not recalls, so they do not have to do them.

I asked my dealer to enable this feature, and they did, no charge. I used it the other day in Colorado at 15 degrees and didn't set the parking brake. Worked just fine.

That's because you have an automatic. In automatic trucks, the truck just has to be in park. if you have a manual, the truck has to be in neutral and the parking brake has to be set.

And my dealer continues to tell me that they can't turn this function on for me... With winter coming, it sure would be nice to have!

jswar,
Don't go to the service department. Go find your salesman and tell him you want it enabled and if it doesn't get enabled it could start costing him some sales. This is the route I took. I ended up having lunch and with my salesman and the two diesel mechanics for the dealership and then they enabled the function for me in the parking lot. The sales department is a good route to circumnavigate the service department.

yeah, you may get it done that way, but i was just saying that they don't have to do it. they can charge you for enabling it if they choose since it's not a recall. and the feature certainly does help warmup, but that's not what it was designed for. i wouldn't (and didn't) pay a dealer one red cent to enable it. they should come from the factory enabled. it takes the dealer 5 minutes to make a customer really happy by doing this for nothing.

Thumbs up

I guess mine was done before I picked it up. Truck origininally went to Colo before I came along and bought it thru my dealer in KS. They had it shipped here and then last winter when it was snowing and freezing I would start the engine then go around scraping the windows. RPMs would increase to 1100 then drop down to normal and about 2 -3 windows later increase again. I never asked for this to be done enabled. Truck is 07.5 w/ 6.7 CTD.

Thanks everyone for all the great info on this site......

That does not mean the your high idle is enabled, this is an automatic thing that happens below a certain temp.

The high idle via the cruise control is what we're talking about.

that is not the high idle. all of the trucks do that in cooler temps. the high idle is a feature that the dealer has to enable. it MAY have been enabled (probably not), but you have to operate it through the cruise control buttons to engage and raise/lower the rpm. it never comes on automatically. that is just the idle up that only goes to 1100 rpm when cold, then turns off when warmed up.
