Ford Guy Moving to Dodge...Maybe
I'm a newbie to this site but have spent much time on the Powerstroke forum basically because I own one. I'll try to keep this short. Bought an '05 F250 6.0 Lariat with 78K on the clock. It's a beautiful truck. Thought diesels were supposed to be good to at least 200K. First time we use it for a family vacation, it strands us and our boat, spends the entire vacation at the out-of-town dealership and ruins what took us 6 months to plan and pay for. Then, if that wasn't enough, it blew a CAC hose twice on the way home from that dealership. The main failure was the infamous failed EGR cooler.
I've never looked at that truck the same way since.
Since I bought the Powerstroke, of course all I hear is how good the Cummins is. I'm looking at an '07 6.7L 2500 SLT 4X4 SRW Mega Cab and I'm supposed to test drive it tonight. The money deal is ok (I don't think a consumer ever wins much at a dealer) but my main concern is what you all think about the 6.7?
Basically, am I jumping from the frying pan (my Powerstroke 6.0) into the fire (Cummins 6.7) in terms of reliability?

i think you are making an awesome decision. Ive been around many 6.no's as my in laws are ford ppl. My father in law has 2 6.no's right now and has had a total of 7 and all of them were nothing but trouble, but yet he keeps going back.... He tells me that he would definitely buy a dodge especially for the cummins but he knows that he would catch nothing but crap from all the ppl he made fun of for having anything but ford.
I have had ZERO problems out of my 6.7. It is an AWESOME motor and tranny (6spd auto). The exhaust brake is also insanely awesome. All this is coming from a die hard chevy man. Sure the Ferd has a better interior IMO but i have no complaints about the interior of mine either.
I think most of the bugs have been worked out. If you buy an 08 i think you wont have any problems at all. If you get a 07 just make sure it has the most recent flashes and you should be good to go.

Sell the Ferd, buy a reliable CTD truck, hang out here, get an education, life will be good.
Ford is still experimenting with diesels and they have a lot of issues to work out. If you have more money than sense then be a guinea pig. The Ford engineers & share holder will love you.
CTD is proven in longevity, reliability, and performance, and when you buy one they throw in a pretty good truck to haul it around in.

How do I know the flashes have been done? What specific questions do I ask or what do I look for? Are there stickers under the hood?
I just want to know what I'm talking about when I go to the dealer.

You wont regret coming over to the dark side, I converted from ford to GMC to my Cummins, this is the best diesel truck ive owned bar none, when I passed my friend in the Rockies this summer in his 2007.5 duramax both of us pulling travel trailers same length and weight up a steep grade, he doesnt say too much about my little 6 cylinder any more hahahaha enjoy.

Visited the DMax site to see what they thought about their trucks and I was shocked to see how many guys there are talking up the 6.7 and the new 6 speed auto. The decision is getting clearer by the post. Thank you all. Maybe I'll have some news tonight. I just wish I would have researched more before I got the Powerstroke. I had just wanted an F250 for so long I made an emotional purchase. I'm 47 now and doing things like that make me wonder if I'll ever grow up.
Anyway, got the wife thinking I need a new truck so I have to strike while the iron is hot (you married guys know what I'm talking about).

I read 5 differant sites for a few months before I made my decision, I got a 06 5.9, and im sure glad I did now, love the grunt that 6 has, ive towed about 22,000 out of the 31,000 I have on her, and it just keeps getting better.

Point is that there's a huge variance from one local market to another. The same truck that might be a steal of the century in one locale might be ripoff in another.

The Cummins isn't perfect, and neiher is the Dodge, but they are pretty darn good. Cummins deserves the respect the company gets, because they refuse to let a lemon slip out the door. There have been some growing pains with new engine launches, but Cummins has done a good job of fixing them promptly-- and an "unproven" Cummins is a safer bet than a new model of another brand, imo.
Cummins has launched new engines for the Dodge application many times-- 1994, 1998, 2003, and 2004.5, and now 2007.
Of these launches, the roughest was probably the 2003-- the HPCR injectors were still somewhat iffy at the time. Now they've got it down. The 1998 launch of the VP44 when well until guys starting hotrodding the trucks and finding they were stranding 20miles from hitting the power switch.
How many engines has Ford gone through in the 17 year run of the venerable 5.9 CTD? I can remember the 7.3IDI, then the 7.3 PSD, the infamous 6.0, and now the 6.4L.
The 6.7L will be around for quite awhile, and now that Dodge has given the Cummins a proper automatic transmission, this combo can be recommended without reservation.

well lets look at it this way i have heard of many cummins engines going into fords but i have never heard of a psd going into a dodge or chevy for that matter. i have heard nothing but good about the 6.7 and the 6 speed trannies. i think they will have to pry the keys to my 05 5.9 out of my cold dead hand.
