I am looking at a 2007 Dodge 2500 with the 5.9 CTD. My question is how does the transmission (automatic) in this truck differ to my 99 CTD auto. My 99 runs the 47re and frankly not real thrilled with it. Am I an idiot considering another auto or bump to the 6.7 with the 6sp auto. What actually changed from the early 07 to the late 07 besides motor and trans and how scared should I be to get a 2007 or 08 year 6.7 cummins. Thanks for all your help in advance!
Others will have more info on changes, but I think you would do very well with either one of the trucks you described. I can only speak for my 08 and 6.7, never having owned a 5.9 but I love mine.
Best to you.
Best to you.

These are changes from '07.5 to 09:
Flash revisions
Late 08's and 09's have a smaller intercooler.
Pre March '09 trucks have the UNLOCKED ecm.
Minor, minor, really minor interior changes (such as window and lock switches have raise area around them) from 08 to 09.
If I have missed anything someone please add one.
If you plan on deleting and will be purchasing a pre '09, then I would have no worries.
That speaking for the 6.7 Cummins/ 6spd auto. I have no prior experience with the 5.9/4 speed auto, only the handshakers.

If I can put in my 2 cents. I had a 2000 with the auto that I traded for the 6.7 and 6 speed auto. The 2000 auto had a loose torque converter that was not really that great. Put in a shift kit and it helped, but it was still lacking. My dad has an 05 with the 4 speed auto. I've driven it lots and its light years ahead of the 47re auto, but the new 6 speed with engine brake is truly amazing. The first 2 gears are lower than the first gear of the 4 speed to get things moving and the 5th and 6th gear is a double overdrive. Its a VERY stout tranny and the computer control is impressive, its always in the right gear. Having 6 gears to choose from instead of 4 is way better. I will never go back to a 4 speed auto. Do I like the emissions stuff on the truck? No, but unplugging the egr dropped my intake temps by 60 to 100 degrees and get better fuel economy in town and running empty on the highway. Towing, mileage stayed the same.
In stock form, I love the grunt of the 6.7 vs the 5.9 in my dads truck. Its worth noting all these trucks are stock. The 6.7 seems to have more down low to get the truck and loads moving. The 6.7 is a good motor, a few people have over 200k on them and still running fine. I did hear of 1 guy who put a rod out the side of a block, but that motor was replaced without a question.
just my unbiased ramblings...

Thanks a lot. Not planning on any mods at first especially during the warranty period. Honestly sounds like the new truck is king. Neat test drive at least. Still keeping my 99 though. The more cummins power the better.
here is an article that will provide some information about the 6 speed auto.
