Question E-Con programmer

Almost a year ago, I got my F-N-L into an '08 6.7 auto 4x4. Of course he doesn't pay attention to the way he drives it or try to drive it like I do. I remind him everytime I see him to run the e-brake all the time and use the auto-stick as well. He is getting around 14-15 mpg. This was a hard sell to him even though at the time I was getting 19.5-20.5 mpg with my '06 5.9 manual 6-speed 4x4.

So, I'm reading my latest Diesel World and they are testing a Hypertech E-con module on a 6.7. Is it just a timing module? or something else? It says something to the effect of increasing power but nothing about how. I don't want to stick him with something that will put his truck into the dealer with more issues than are possible without it, but the mileage gains would be REALLY worth it for him.

It looks like I'm getting 16.5-17.5 with my 2wd dually, so I'm not that far off and I'll know by changing my driving habits soon if I can get better. He is going to drive his like he does and just gripe to me about it. If anyone has one of these or any more input on it, please feel free to share it whether it be pro or con. He doesn't want any more HP or performance increases but certainly if I can get him something that will just do mileage then he'll probably go along with it.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I believe it is a timing and fueling box, similar to the Power Pup or Max Energy (just a detuned version) or PPE Xcelerator, etc. With my experience with the Power Pup on my truck before I removed all the emissions equipment, I don't think any programmer is going to give a stock 6.7L noticeable mileage gains. While timing advancement and increased fueling improve the efficiency of the engine itself, they also create more particulates which will result in more regens. This will negate any benefits in fuel economy you will see from the programmer. Thus far, with this 6.7L, it is my opinion that the only real options are a.) start deleting stuff or b.) leave it TOTALLY stock. Anything else is a waste of money.

That's the answer I was looking for.

Thanks,

Chris
