correct 4x4 operation?

Howdy Ya'll, I am new to this forum and to Dodge trucks and 4x4's. My 08 SLT has only 4200 miles and is mostly a garage queen because I work overseas. What is the correct way to use the 4x4 control on the dash? 4 Lock seems to work fine and all 4 will lock and dig. When in 4 Low the front axle does not dig. Is this a normal differential type of operation in 4 Low or is something wrong here? Thanks

Welcome to the DTR!

4 Lock is just the old 4 High

4 Low is well, 4 Low

The front axle should behave the same in 4 Lock/Low other than the gearing being different.

In 4lo the front wheels are likely not being spun fast enough to dig like in 4lock, but you would notice them spinning if you got it stuck.

Since we're on the topic...

I'm putting this out to you guys who get to use their trucks in the snow. Going thru a foot or more of snow....... 4hi or 4low? I've not had a 4x in the snow before living here in SD, but this past winter I had an occasion or two to go thru some deep stuff. I used 4hi and got thru it, but noticed it didn't take long to get the water temp up. Thanks

I always use 4 high. I have only used low once and it was for pulling out a small stump.

Is the 4 lo lite on solid or blinking? 4 lo is tough to get into sometimes so you may not have actually been all the way into 4 lo.

Well, I know that if the 4low light is blinking it means the xfer case is not locked into gear. I've found that to shift into 4low completely, I have to stop the truck completely.... and either shift into neutral or park, I can't remember which.

Should be in neutral and rolling ever so slightly, less than a walk for 4 lo.
